They are basically local-only communities on lemmy.world at this point, unfortunately. There is no federation to any other instance for any lemmy.world user posts on those communities.

You haven't been doing anything wrong from your side - we have just been experiencing some growing pains with a new Lemmy feature (image proxying).

It's a bit unfortunate that these problems cropped up, but ultimately we will benefit from this new feature, as it will help solve several issues with Lemmy image hosting overall. So I hope you can forgive the issues and trust that the end result is worth it!

Ahh I see the issue & have fixed that example post now.

Basically, I had already fixed the root cause which was breaking the images, but there was a period while I was working on the fix during which some images posted would remain in a broken state. I don't unfortunately have a fast way of automatically detecting and fixing those broken images unfortunately, but I can fix them one by one manually.

Having said that, any new images posted now are not getting broken. I'll see what I can do about the broken ones, maybe I can find some way to automate fixing them.

Hey, I'm not seeing any issues at the moment, can you share more details about what is broken for you currently?

[–] sunaurus@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I've made a few PRs to hopefully improve the image situation, these are all running on lemm.ee as of now as well, so hopefully it's better now!

Maybe this community is a good target for that? Let me know your thoughts.

FWIW I know some users often check their local announcement/support communities through other instances during downtime, so it can actually be quite nice to have such communities federated to other instances.

The maximum file size limit for images hosted directly on lemm.ee servers is always visible in the sidebar of our front page. The limit stands at 500kb per image currently.

Additionally, It's also possible to post images larger than 500kb, they just have to be hosted externally. The markdown for this is ![alt text](image url)

I've made some experimental changes, please let me know if you notice any difference

[–] sunaurus@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago (8 children)

I've implemented a workaround for the imgur rate limiting now!

[–] sunaurus@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I've changed the logic now to no longer proxy imgur images, so their rate limits should no longer affect us!

Thank you, that's super useful, I will try to investigate what was going on with that request

Hey, I don't actually see anything abnormal in terms of metrics. What continent are you connecting from (if you don't mind sharing)?

Do you know around what time it got slow for you?

Originaaltekst:

Me, /r/eesti moderaatorid, oleme otsustanud toetada algaval nädalal toimuvat protesti. Tõenäoliselt on enamik aktiivsetest Redditi kasutajatest olukorrast juba teadlikud, aga väga lühikese ülevaatena on Reddit andnud teada, et nende API muutub tasuliseks. See, et API muutub tasuliseks, poleks iseenesest probleem, aga antud hinnakiri on absurdne (ühe alternatiivse rakenduse jaoks 20 miljonit dollarit aastas), muudatusest teatati ainult 30 päeva varem (tegu on muudatusega, mis pühib alternatiivsete rakenduste ja bottide arendajate sissetuleku hetkega minema), ja Redditi vastused tagasisidele ja küsimustele on olnud alla igasugust arvestust.

Me oleme vabatahtlikud. Me ei saa modereerimise eest palka.

The other thread about favorite mechanics is great, so let's also do the opposite: what are some of your most hated mechanics?

Some projects have a public roadmap or a list of priorities that give an idea of the direction that the maintainers want to take.

Is there anything like this for Lemmy currently?

I'm not a huge roller coaster guy, so I actually hadn't gone on any rides during all of my adult life until I recently visited Linnanmäki while travelling in Finland.

I tried all the rides, but I was seriously scared for my life during a few of them, especially Ukko (someone else's POV video).

Rationally I realize that these rides must be designed in such a way that it's impossible to fall out even when hanging upside down, but I clearly remember feeling that if I relax my body and stop holding on for dear life, I will definitely fall out.

For people who go on rides more often, do you manage to overcome this feeling and actually relax your muscles while you're on a ride?

Eeldan, et postituse kirjutamise hetkel ei ole meid Lemmys veel just palju, aga kui millalgi siia sattud, siis võiksid kommentaari lisada, et mis sind siia tõi.

Welcome!

Due the recent high amount of users coming over from Reddit, many of the existing large Lemmy instances have been struggling to keep up. This instance was created to help spread out the load on the Lemmy network. Lemmy newbies are welcome here.

The goal for lemm.ee is to provide a home Lemmy instance for anybody that needs one. That means that you are more than welcome here even if you mostly intend to just interact with other instances rather than this one!

Note: if you want to start up a new community here, but the name is already taken by an inactive community, then don't worry! Inactive communities can be transferred to new moderators. Please follow the steps outlined in our FAQ under the "How can I take over an inactive community" section.

What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a federated link aggregator. This image explains it pretty well! In general, the fact that it's "federated" just means that it works much like e-mail - in the same way as a Gmail user can send e-mails to iCloud Mail users or Outlook users, a lemm.ee user is able to participate in communities on many different Lemmy instances. Regardless of which Lemmy instance your account lives on, you are a part of the federated network and can interact with other users from other instances, so this instance is as good of a place as any other to get started with Lemmy.

If you have any further questions about Lemmy, please check out our guide/FAQ!

About lemm.ee (this instance)

lemm.ee is intended to be a serious long-term instance, not just some random experiment.

You can always find the most up to date rules and general info about lemm.ee in the sidebar on our front page. If you want to know more about how this instance is run, you can check our administration and federation policy.

For some technical background, this instance is operated following industry best practices:

  • Our infrastructure is robust and has been built up with redundancy and recoverability in mind
  • The servers are running in the cloud (this is not some bedroom server situation!)
  • All of the infrastructure is described declaratively as code, which allows relatively quick and safe changes to any part of our infrastructure whenever necessary
  • Our entire database is backed up constantly, so in the worst case, we can always restore our data

A significant chunk of funding for this infrastructure comes directly from our amazing community. This support is essential to help secure our future. These supporters deserve the gratitude of all lemm.ee users!

You can read more details about how our instance is funded on this GitHub sponsorships page. There is also a Ko-Fi donations page as a back-up.
