Previously: Submission Statement Edition

Haven't done these in a while, so let's get started.

  1. Since we haven't really heard any feedback one way or the other, rule 8 is now official. To be fair, we've had a lot less microblog posts than I expected (only one Twitter/X post in the last month even after I waited longer than the initial 1-2 weeks expected, and that was a crosspost.)
  • Again, the rules are always a work in progress, feel free to give your two cents here whenever you like.
  1. As you guys know, PipedLinkBot went completely insane 2 days ago and looks like it's temporarily shut down. So, I'd like to use this opportunity to explain why I banned the bot pretty much immediately after our community reopened. (And gloat a bit, of course)
  • Even though I do agree with the principle of using open source, privacy focused frontend instead of using Youtube directly, I have a real problem with using a bot to respond every time somebody posts a Youtube link. It feels like spam, and it doesn't feel like it serves any utility besides pushing an agenda (even though many people here would agree with it). Most people have seen it around here enough to use pipedvideo if they wanted it to use it already.

  • I think it's always been a rage inducing part of the reddit experience that you see you received a response to your comment, but only have it been a bot smugly correcting your grammar or tell you all your letters are in order or something useless like that. So, for this place, I would like to make sure that everyone you talk to here is a real person as much as possible, because people inspire people to be greater, but bots don't.

The Thunderbird for Android beta is out and we’re asking our community to help us test it. Beta testing helps us find critical bugs and rough edges that we can polish in the next few weeks. The more people who test the beta and ensure everything in the testing checklist works correctly, the better!

Anyone can be a beta tester! Whether you’re an experienced beta tester or you’ve never tested a beta image before, we want to make it easy for you. We are grateful for your time and energy, so we aim to make testing quick, efficient, and hopefully fun!!

The release plan is as follows, and we hope to stick to this timeline unless we encounter any major hurdles:

  • September 30 – First beta for Thunderbird for Android
  • Third week of October – first release candidate
  • Fourth week of October – Thunderbird for Android release

Hello all!

We have a car that supports android auto wired (Not wireless) When my dads phone is connected and someone is scrolling true spotify it keeps coming up with a safety break every few seconds or so. Is their some way to disable this without rooting the device he is using a Pixel 7? My phone does not have this issue and i can scroll all day long without it coming up but i am using a P7P with Graphene OS so i suspect it is some kind of permission AA doesn't have in my case.

I get that the safety break is supposed to be a "feature" to keep your eyes in the road. in practice it does the opposite as you are looking at the screen waiting for it to pass so you can go on with the scrolling.

Hello all,

Probably might seem like a dumb question, but I have searched and tried everything I could find.

I have a Galaxy A12, running Android 12. I have a high capacity microSD card in it, where I store lots or stuff.

For the life of me I cannot find a way to set the download folder on said SD card as the default location to which to download.

I cannot find anywhere in the OS settings, and I have searched and searched and looked online. I could not even get a setting in Firefox whereby I could establish this preference. One article stated you need to go into about:config ... well, that is just blank.

For bleeps sake I was able to do this on my goddamn pocket PC in the year 2000 with two freaking taps on the screen. How the hell have they gone out of their way to devolve some fundamental concepts??

Anyway, my ranting notwithstanding, I am hoping to be delightfully abashed when someone points to some obvious thing I managed to overlook. But it's not seeming likely.

Please help :-@

I'm looking at the G play/G Power editions which I'd like to root with KernelSU. Which kernel versions do these devices have?

Thanks

I'm so fucking tired of Google. I want to pull the trigger and switch to a different Android distro but I won't have time until I get a break from school. Fuck Google.

As the title says. Google had released the pixel 9 pro xl here already, but not the 9 pro. Bummer for the early adopters, because they also dropped the price about $200ish when the new iphone dropped, a couple of months after launch.

Wanna share some of my thoughts re this. I don't wanna write a very long essay, so here are just 5 items –

  1. I agree that 1 swipe down should let us alter the brightness.

  2. I'm OK with no sun icon in the brightness slider. I'll know that it's brightness even without any icon. But some may have a hard time, so adding an icon will be more user-friendly for them.

  3. Obviously Nothing didn't wanna overuse their dot matrix design. I side with Nothing on this 1. Putting it all over the os will be 👎 for me. But beauty is subjective. Some may want the dot matrix design all over the os.

Carl Pei probably thought re the folks switching from a different Android phone or an iPhone to a Nothing phone. He probably wants the process to be as smooth as possible so the user will be satisfied. So he didn't use the dot matrix design on the icons. He said something related to this. Changing many things fast versus changing some things gradually. He said Nothing couldn't be overeager to alter stuff.

  1. Re the phone and messages apps, I wonder whether Nothing wanted the users to use the Google apps for these or Nothing is making their own now and will release those in the future. Is it so hard to make a phone app and a messages app?

  2. I agree that Google photos is not for everyone.

Some don't wanna have a Google account.

Google photos is cloud-storage-focused, not local-storage-focused. Some want a local-storage-focused gallery app.

Its search doesn't work offline. Some need a gallery app that works offline.

Are there any recent Android models that have native call recording enabled in EU?

I will root the phone if necessary, but considering that Google is closing the platform down even more by making custom/rooted ROMs fail security checks, I would prefer to avoid that.

Lizard insurance app mandates you give location permission, refusing access to the rest of the app otherwise. I have 0 intention of giving them this but so far have failed to find a phone number to call them (their mobile website tells me to use the app).

Until I find a different company run by living, real people, my current intention is to use the app to manage my insurance in the meantime. I don't want to give them my location, even if it's only while using the app, so how do I get the app to think it has my location when it actually doesn't?

inb4 just use a computer: nah. It's about spite at this point.

i use firefox with a lot of extensions, making the shortcut widget with the built-in add to home screen function won't work because it'll open the site with extensions disabled.

i've managed to make it work better by making the shortcut with internet disabled which opens the link in the actual firefox app but that gives the shortcut app a generic icon which looks bad.

i've searched around and there are apps that make shortcuts but no luck finding a foss one.
