Show me your BB (sh.itjust.works)
submitted 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) by guylacaptivite@sh.itjust.works to c/bassment@feddit.de

Yamaha's got on my radar when I wanted a bass to start playing and learning music again. I just couldn't find a bass that had such features and build quality for the price. So I got a bb434 and loved it so much I immediately looked into the history of the model. Then I found out about this one here, a 1984 3000s, being on sale 20mins from my place. I couldn't resist and am so glad I didn't. It's perfectly balanced, the neck is slim, narrow and well played in. And even though it's a PJ style it has it's very own punchy and resonant tone that reminds me of a piano. They'll bury me with this thing in hand. I had never heard of them before and they are kinda rare(there's 3 on reverb) so I wanted to share this great instrument with fellow like minded people. Get one if you can.

Any other BB fans around here? Any other somewhat lesser known basses you guys think we should check out?

Just stumbled upon this. They look pretty nice and solid, but they still don't have the Sadowsky VTC. Apparently they will be sold for under 1k€, when they arrive in Europe. The last generation of the chinese build MetroExpress basses where ok for their price, but not great. Does anyone here have already a hands on experience with them? What are your thoughts? I will probably pick one up, if they are available, especially since I need a replacement for my Jazz Bass.

The tin of bees wax that came with my Bass is going empty and I want to try an alternative. Has anyone have experience with Carnauba Wax or something similar?

Hello! I'm looking to get my first 5 string and I have narrowed it down to the Yamaha TRBX. There is a used 305 for sale for £330 near me and there is a new 505 for sale for £530. Are the extra features worth the £200?

I have a friend who's really into them, so I thought it would be a nice surprise if I could learn one of their songs for him. I'm just not familiar with their catalogue, so does anyone have any suggestions for where to start? My level is "advanced noob" :)

I am stoked with this new bass I bought, my first fretless ever. I got it mainly because it had an ebony fingerboard, and because basses from this factory and period have a great reputation.

More pictures in comments (not sure if the image upload succeeded for the OP).

List of modifications

It was originally: Ibanez Soundgear SR-1000 1987/88 Made in Japan, in the Fujigen factory Ebony fretboard Maple neck Alder Body Black lacquer finish "Power Curve" active electronics (weird stuff that ALWAYS did a mid cut, switch would choose how much and the knob would choose which frequency)

Previous owner(s):

  • Had it defretted
  • Replaced the body's black finish with natural finish
  • Replaced vol/blend and active "power curve" electronics with passive vol/vol/tone controls
  • Broke the tone pot shaft and applied superglue, fixing the whole thing in place

My work on it:

  • Lowered the action
  • Cleaned and oiled the fingerboard
  • Replaced the foam underneath the neck pickup to bring it closer to the strings
  • Added missing screws to the bridge
  • Replaced the stuck tone knob with an EMG VMC

The superglued tone knob required a lot of brute force. I tried WD-40, acetone, pulled out every subcomponent of the pot meter one by one and eventually had to go to a machine shop to have it demolished with a heavy duty drill. But it's out and my active parametric mid EQ is in!!

So now I have 2 volume pots, and a stacked knob for the active mid EQ: botton for frequency (200-1000 Hz) and top for cut/boost.

Pretty unusual setup but it works well for me. I like setting a mid boost on the higher frequency for extra nasal/trombone-like fretless "burp" sound on the bridge pickup, while boosting lower frequency gets a more supportive "Precision bass"-like tone. The mid cut is nice for more percussive playing (using a pick or when slapping).

I am considering changing the vol/vol to vol/balance but that means you can never have the full unfiltered tone of both pickups when switching to passive mode. I am also considering adding a second 9V battery so the EMG circuit has more headroom. I do notice compression with some settings but I'm not looking forward to drilling in the small body and I don't think it will fit in the existing cavity.

Planned future work

  • Replace the disconnected SPDT on/on switch with a DPDT active/passive switch
  • Have the fingerboard levelled

What do I play with it?

Honoring the birth period of this bass, the 1980s, I have been playing a lot of Pino's work with Paul Young: "Wherever I Lay My Hat", "Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down". Also Kate Bush' Wuthering Heights.

"Come Back And Stay", "Babooshka" and Paul Simon's Graceland album ("Diamonds on the Soles Of Her Shoes", "You Can Call Me Al") are on the to-do list.

Do you have any suggestions? Songs to play and modifications to make to the bass?

I recently bought this modified Ibanez Soundgear SR-1000 1987. Some past owner had it defretted, replaced the electronics with passive vol-vol-tone, replaced the black finish on the body with a natural one and somehow got the tone pot stuck. No problem, I thought, I'll just remove it and replace it with an active stacked pot thingy.

But the problems started when I removed the screw holding the knob and the knob stayed put. After a lot of WD-40 and brute force, I managed to pull it off to find the cause, and the next problem:

The potmeter had once broken off and been superglued into place. The superglue affected not just the potmeter itself but also the knob, which was solidly stuck to the upper part of the potmeter (right in the picture), and the locking nut holding the potmeter in place in the body.

I know acetone dissolves superglue, but I am afraid it will also ruin the finish. Is there any other way I can get this cursed tone pot out of the bass?

We are about to play some shows outside of our area and I have to decide wether I bring my 410 or go straight DI out. In the one hand like to have the cab on stage for presence and in case the in-house mixer is unreliable. On the other we can save a couple of bucks and rent a smaller car if we keep it at home. What’s your experience so far? Does DI-Out-only work for you or do you make sure to have a cab on stage every night, no matter what?

Just curious on what you prefer. I've never really settled myself, but I've never tried anything thinner than a 1mm. I would like to try something thinner because 1mms dont feel like they bend enough for me.

Wow, the difference in quality between the Squier and the Donner is incredible. It just feels so much smoother to play, I don't get the rattle and it just sounds and feels better overall. I'm confused by the reviews comparing the Donner to a p-bass. There's no comparison. I'm so glad I finally got my hands on my mini! It looks like a doll's toy next to the standard scale though!

Oh and added bonus, the tone dial actually does something.

I'm still having trouble offloading my Donner. I can't even trade it in.

I've got a nice Bacchus Woodline active Jazz Bass, but over the years the neck bent severly. Bacchus doesnt answer my mails and the local luthiers cost me more than a new bass. So, now to my question: I have the hardware and electronics of the Bacchus bass and I want to know, which bass can be a solid replacement for upgrading. I dont live in the US and importing from Warmoth costs me quite a lot. I've been thinking of a Marcus Miller V3 or a Cort GB34 JJ.

Do you have other recommendations or ideas? Any help would be nice!

Few details have been shared as to what products will be available but Fender and Mission Engineering have promised a full line priced from $499 to $3,299, with “historic reproductions” joined by new designs “that incorporate modern technology to meet the needs of today’s musicians”.

My Warwick strap locks have worn out and snapped off right in the middle of filming a music video..

Which strap locks did you find reliable? Afaik Schaller and Dunlop offer some, but I've never seen them in use.

I'm contemplating to build a bass after I'm done with my other projects, so I was wondering what specs others are into. Would you go with:

  • A wax finish or color coating?
  • How many strings do you prefer?
  • Fretless, fretted, or even fan-fret?
  • What about scale length?

So many options there. What would you do if money wouldn't matter?

I'm curious what Amp Simulators y'all enjoy and recommend.

I've been using GK Amplification 3 Pro from Audified, specifically the 800RB.

What I like the most is that they keep stock of their full production line. Would you pay a visit if you were in Japan?
