The idea for the slow motion explosion came from the movie The Hobbit... I think it was The Battle of the Five Armies where Legolas was stepping on falling rocks faster than they could fall to get himself up a falling tower. It's an unrealistic and ridiculous scene, and also one of my favorites haha. So I figured something so over the top and so unrealistic could be really fun to play in a TTRPG. Just imagine it - as a deadly explosion is taking place, time has slowed down as the players suddenly find themselves being able to move incredibly fast. The bad guys are still beating them up (or maybe the bad guys are getting incinerated as they fall through the cracks?) as the players are jumping from one moving rock to another to get themselves to safety.

I know there are tons of roadside ambush battlemaps out there if you look for them, but particularly I wanted one in a sparse forest location that was much bigger than most of what I was finding. I also like playing with different elevation levels to make combat more interesting, so I added several tiers within the map where players or foes can get the jump on their victims below.

I'm currently running Hoard of the Dragon Queen for 5e, and specifically I created this map to be used with the Stranded event from Episode 4: On the Road. Though of course, it's generic enough to be used for any encounter along a forested dirt road.

Map was created with Dungeondraft, utilizing the following asset packs:

• Krager’s Shadow & Light Pack
• Tych - Dirt & Grime

Map is 100px grid, and is 35x30. Link contains additional versions with and without grid and cart, in case you want to use this map for an encounter that doesn't include helping an unlucky merchant or luring players into a trap.

This is the last bit that I released that makes a large 50x70 map with 4 separate connected map releases. This last one I think finally answers where all those lights are coming from - the shrine at the bottom left of the large map! Since it is a colorful and nature-y map, I themed it as fey, but it can be any kind of forest / plains / river / wilderness map as well, doesn't have to be fey.

I threw together a little treasure cave together for my table. There's a spider boss hanging out in that northern room guarding a Spiderclimber's Kit in the very next room. Once they have it, they'll be able to snag treasure at the bottom of the deep pit and the high cliff.

OK, the previous map's vegetation was bugging me, so I took a bit of time to practice those particulars. I want to add a bit more depth to the shrubs, but hey, they still get the job done.

This map has a TON of detail. It is small, but mighty… and it took a LONG time to make. I figured this map could serve as several types of a shop - it could be a book shop, an alchemy shop, a potion shop, and perhaps a few others as well, such as a shop of magic curiosities… or even a combination of them all! It is why I provided the map without the cauldron to the Patrons - I figured if you wanted a book shop, it wouldn’t make sense to have a big ol’ boiling cauldron in the middle of it.

This time the release is a phased map! One of the winning themes for the month is underwater, so I decided to go for a shark-themed map. The fun thing about this one is that it is loopable, so you can loop the shark as many times as you want, before launching it into an attack. If you want to loop it, you can go from phase 8 to phase 2 and then just continue to 3, 4 ,5 etc. If you want to go into an attack, you can do a smooth transition from phase 6 into 1 and add the shark token on the map (available to Patrons only). The shadow of the shark will create a lot of tension for your players, and I designed it in a way where the bigger and blurrier the shadow is, the further away the shark, but as it gets closer, the shadow becomes smaller and sharper.
