I actually rarely use my phone's browser unless I need to look something up or check my bank account. Chrome makes me tired, firefox is very slow, samsung's could be an option.

I find myself bouncing between browsers a lot and I want to find one that I truly like.

Right now, I am using Google Chrome and I don't like the design. I've used Opera, Opera GX, Microsoft Edge and Firefox all of which I had stuff I did not like or for Edge the amount of Bing it was pushing in my face.

I use Windows 11 and I want to know if there is a browser that could fit my nitpicky brain.

Damn it feels like just yesterday I was reading a comic by one of my favorite artists about this brand new browser that was released by Google. Even though I don't really use Chrome much outside of work anymore, it would be an understatement to say what a massive impact Chrome has made not just on Web Browsers but also the Internet as a whole (for better or worse).

P.S Fun fact, Chrome 15 was also the first version back in 2011 that overtook the monopoly of IE to become the world's most popular browser and it has never given that title up to this day.

In my travels, I've often heard:

I'd like to check out Ungoogled Chromium, but I've heard there all kinds of hoops you have to jump through in order to use extensions, and I really don't want to deal with all of that

Now, while these 'hoops' aren't much more than a ten second web search, a 60k download, and some dragging and dropping, I understand the hesitancy (especially, among those who consider themselves to be less than tech literate)

However, last night I had to set-up a couple new desktops, and upon installing Ungoogled Chromium, I noticed they've recently included a 'first run' page when you initially open the browser that walks the user through the downloading and installation of the chrome store extension. Because of this, it's not even 8:30am, but I've already witnessed two self-professed 'tech illiterates' install various extensions, and set the browser up to their liking.

Anyway, I was unaware of this new attempt at user friendliness, think it's a pretty great idea, and wanted to spread some awareness.

Mozilla Flowstate? (lemmit.online)

I was looking around in the Mozilla archive website because I was bored, and I found a few neat things. First is these "pine" folders, which seems to be normal Firefox but on the "nightly-pine" release channel? They seem to lag behind to normal nightly a bit (last build was on the 10th of August).

What exactly is nightly-pine? Searching it up doesn't reveal anything...

And second is the most interesting thing I have stumbled upon, the pinebuild folder

Which seems to be for a completely different browser called Flowstate? Again, searching "Mozilla Flowstate" or "Firefox Flowstate" doesn't reveal anything...and it's also on the nightly-pine update channel.

The last version was on 2022/09/01 so it doesn't seem to be anything legacy/old but rather a pretty new thing that was never developed upon.

(Also Flowstate will try to update to the 10th of August pine build because it's on the nightly-pine channel, but will always fail because these two are completely different browsers.)

I am experiencing an extraordinary problem. Whenever I run the new game Starfield, it appears to corrupt my Firefox installation. I have been using Firefox since June 2022 when my Chromium based browsers started throwing Status_Access_Violation errors. I have reinstalled windows 3 times since starfield early access launch. Once was a repair, the other 2 were fresh installs to new hard drives. Each time I experience the same problem, chrome and edge don't work, but Firefox runs excellent until I run Starfield. When I run system restore Firefox is fixed, but as soon as I run starfield it breaks again. I can run any other game I want without issue including Fallout 4, Stellaris, Skyrim & Red Dead Redemption 2. Starfield itself runs flawlessly in Ultra detail. I run Windows 10 with a Core i7 7700k, RTX 2080 Super, 16gb of Gskill DDR4 ram on a Gigabyte Ultra Durable GA-X170-SLI-CF motherboard. I DO NOT overclock my hardware. I have tried a 128gig Intel SSD & Western Digital 1TB SSD. They experienced the same failures whether I repaired windows or did a reformat and reinstall fresh. I also tried a 256gb intel M.2 SSD I borrowed which strangely seemed to work fine without the Status_Access_Violation errors, but maybe I didn't run it long enough or didn't have a specific problematic windows update? Either way it wasn't large enough for both Windows 10 and Starfield together which is why I bought the 1TB WD M.2 drive. I am at my whit's end here and starting to consider replacing the motherboard and/or CPU, but they are both $200+ components with a week or wait time for delivery. I don't have a spare processor because I sold it to a friend who wanted a better system. Does anyone have any ideas on what Starfield could be changing and how I could correct this? I have a support tickets out to Bethesda and post to the Firefox forum by I am not confident they will reply, thanks.

Hey!

So I’ve been using Microsoft Edge for a while now, but I'm considering making the switch to Firefox. However, there are a few features in Edge that I really like and I'm wondering if there are any solutions or workarounds in Firefox. Here are my gripes:

Tab Organization: One of the things I love about Edge is its built-in collapsible tab organization with colors, labels, and the ability to pin tabs for quick access. Are there any similar extensions or built-in features in Firefox that can provide a similar tab organization experience?

Web Select: Another feature I find useful in Edge is the ability to select and copy a specific region of text on a webpage. I know Firefox has a somewhat similar feature for taking screenshots, but I'm specifically looking for the text selection functionality. Is there any way to achieve this in Firefox?

Battery Life: As I'm in my second year of college, I'll be relying heavily on my recently purchased Legion Slim 5 laptop. While it offers decent battery life of around 7 and a half hours, I'm concerned about Firefox's reputation for being less power-efficient compared to other browsers. Edge's efficiency and tab sleep mode have been quite helpful for me, especially with a lot of tabs open. Are there any "under-the-hood" tweaks or settings in Firefox that can help improve its power usage aside from adblocking, disabling automatic updates, or disabling hardware acceleration?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Chromium or Thorium? (lemmit.online)

I've just switched from Firefox to ungoogled chromium for performance and security reasons. Although, while scrolling through the internet, I found the browser named Thorium. They both are eerily similar, and I have balanced ideas of using both of them. 50 tabs only took about 300 megabites of ram with 5 youtube tabs, and a few others. I like both of the designs, so which is 'better' (In your opinion, don't start a war)? Which one should I use? Please help.

Title. I'm scrambling for every little bit of performance I can get here, especially with discord not being very nice to it... I know it's a very niche usecase, but I wanna hear your opinions on it.

Currently running Floorp which is doing meh.

I love brave, but it constantly freezes, have to re enter address, does not open reddit links in reddit app even when I choose link to be opebed in reddit (turned off open external links in brave froms settings). sometiems I clear data on brave and its random, it may work properly or it may start constant freezes and not opening links. Brave is perfect in every way, expect what I mentioned and its unbearable.

I’m curious to know if I’m the only one to use more than 1 browser. I’m using edge for job, Firefox personal and brave for investments. I’m thinking to try new ones like vivaldi and librewolf. And maybe go from 3 to 2 browsers. What’s your opinion? You do the same?

Used to be able to choose panda as user profile icon. Noticed a while back that it was gone, and hoping it would make a comeback. You can still see it on my taskbar, but replaced by a globe.

Nothing of consequence. Just curious why Microsoft decided to kill it off

As per the title.

I think Opera is pretty cool, with all the customization options...I customized my browser to look like a retro hand-held with 8bit filters. It also allows me to watch Youtube in pop-up mode while I play games.

But to my understanding, Opera was recently sold to a Chinese company. and they have...dubious...policies on data collection. 1. But what if I use Opera strictly for gaming / entertainment stuff? I have a separate gmail account for entertainment and "serious" stuff.

  1. Do you guys know of any browser with Opera's level of customization?

I ran the Speedometer 2.1 and the Jetstream 2.1 tests from

Before running I fully quit every app to make sure it's a clean session utilizing the full potential of my machine and no other tabs running, also full screen enabled.

I ran them on a Macbook Air M1 base model. Some basic opensource extensions were installed in the browsers (password managers, adblocking, translation)

Brave

Speedometer
  1. 295 +- 18
  2. 239 +- 11
  3. 190 +- 17
  4. CRASH
Jetstream
  • 277

Librewolf (Firefox Fork)

Speedometer
  1. 231 +- 7.9
  2. 234 +- 6.6
  3. 235 +- 6.8
Jetstream
  • 173

Safari

Speedometer
  1. 214 +- 41
  2. 148 +- 9.7
  3. 116 +- 19
Jetstream
  • 211

Notes

Brave has this very weird behavior... the Speedometer test slows down everytime I run it, and after 3 runs it crashes the webpage.

Librewolf (Firefox Fork) is the most stable out of the three by far.. but also the slowest in Jetstream performance and the famous saying goes that some websites are not optimized or don't agree well with the Gecko engine.

Safari I guess the only benefit it has is the tight integration in the ecosystem (iCloud tabs, iCloud keychain, AirDrop and how efficient it is in resource management), but lacks way behind in performance and possibly has the same issues as Firefox regarding optimization and rendering.

Privacy

After enabling WebGL and disabling resist.Fingerprinting in Librewolf to not break websites, I found Brave to be the most privacy friendly browser. Safari even with AdGuard is way behind the other two.

UI

After removing all the crap that comes with Brave out of the box, and enabling vertical tabs I think it's best UI currently available. Firefox has potential due to how customizable it is but I tried the latest release of Floorp and found it buggy (even the basic implementation of vertical tabs).

I'll stick to Brave until Firefox performance and optimization improves..

I'm Brave user, but I'm sometimes checking Vivaldi out to see the progress.

What I like about Vivaldi is that they offer alternative ways of downloading Android apps, like uptodown and also, directly from their website. Brave does not do that and it's irritating being dependent on Google Play Store.

What's more, Brave focuses mainly on crypto, just check out their release notes- , while Vivaldi single-mindedly focuses on making browser better.

I also prefer Vivaldi's implementation of sync, it provides better peace of mind, instead of Brave's.

Vivaldi's built-inSpeed Dial and unique features are amazing, Brave does not do that.
