Hi, Between versions 319 and 343, the app has seen significant improvements in cross-platform federation support (aka PieFed), a more robust alert system, and enhanced link previews.

You can now watch for new content on Communities, Posts, and Persons. When there is a new Post or Comment you will get a notification.

On Piefed instances it will use the native API to get alerts, and on Lemmy instances we poll for updates in the background at the interval you set.

🌟 Big New Additions (319 to 343):

Community Alerts & Watching (v334): A major new feature under Settings > Alerts that allows you to "watch" specific communities, posts, or users to receive notifications. Enhanced Federation Support (PieFed/Mbin): PieFed: Added support for Community Topics, improved parent ID resolution, and better voting/profile handling. Mbin & Fediverse: Added specialized link preview tags for Mbin, Mastodon, and Bluesky to better identify content sources. Major Link Preview Overhaul (v324-v325): Link preview cards are now integrated directly into posts and comments. They now resolve internal links (Settings, Multicommunities) and display titles/icons for Lemmy/PieFed users and communities. List Banners (v341): Added new visual banners for the Inbox and Saved pages to improve navigation and consistent look and feel. Sticky Sorting (v320): You can now set and persist specific sort orders on a per-community basis. Sign-In Redesign (v333): The entire Sign-In screen was updated with a fresh, modern design.

Cheers!

Hi,

If you've been on beta you've probably already seen some of this as I worked out bugs and other issues. But in general the top line is there's been some major re-architecture of the app which should let it feel even snappier and more performant than before. I've also added Image Gallery support, so now any post with multiple images in the body will auto-collapse into one image gallery. This is configurable in the settings if you prefer to see all of the images as well. I've also taken Horizontal swiping on posts out of 'Experimental' and it should handle pagination and backing-out more gracefully.

Galleries and video playback now work better and load in the right resolutions, images and thumbnails behave consistently, and animations feel smoother. I also made caching and performance improvements which should reduce stutters and stale content.

If you have any feature requests please let me know :)

TL;DR Changes (versions 287–301)

  • Media & galleries: added image galleries and video support in galleries; fixed uploaded images not showing, full-resolution image loading, tall-thumbnail aspect-ratio preservation, alt-text display, and various image preload/load timeouts and error-handling improvements.
  • Playback & UI: added video autoplay countdown animation, removed small image animation delays, improved community search relevance, adjusted image animation timing, and smoothed swipe-to-close behavior.
  • Caching & performance: fixed multiple comment/post caching issues (including edits showing cached content), introduced a setting to control max cache size, improved comment rendering performance, reduced memory leaks, and generally improved scroll feel and pagination.
  • Offline, federation & reliability: added offline fallback for community pages, federation detection for comments, enhanced error messages, fixed gray-screen and other stability issues, and reverted/adjusted settings storage to improve reliability.
  • Permissions, downloads & validation: improved Android permission handling for downloads, added file validation for downloaded images, and implemented download timeout and retry logic.
  • Misc UI & quality-of-life: added a bug report button, adjusted Export button placement, fixed bottom-sheet and external-link behaviors, made reply text selectable, fixed thumbnails not being clickable, and other small layout/typo fixes.

Bug Report

Describe the issue: I had two comments in my inbox on the same post. I tried to upvote the second one (yours - thanks!) and instead it upvoted the top one.

(edit: after posting this I went back to the inbox and it worked correctly)

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create post
  2. Wait for comments
  3. Visit inbox
  4. Upvote the second one. Top one upvoted instead

Bug Report

Describe the issue: Upvoting comments that are from a crosspost give the following error:

Error: AppError(ErrorType.unknown): An unexpected error occurred: LemmyApiException: couldnt find comment

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Visit https://reddthat.com/post/58720048
  2. Scroll under the Cartoons section
  3. Try to upvote any comment (I haven't tried replying, might be the same issue)

Note: selecting cartoons from the crosspost list and then upvoting is working as expected. Also upvoting a comment on the original post (below comics) whilst on that page is working. Might be a caching issue?

Link preview is rendering the thumbnail for the links in this post but tapping on it gives a page not found error. Perhaps it's because of the URL method used.

~~If I scroll up in the comments section of my history at a certain speed, it stutters similar to that previous bug that causes stuttering and when you scrolled up on post comments. If you scroll up at a faster speed that it's not an issue but at slower speeds, it appears. Here's a video of when I try to scroll up.~~

With xmsall font size setting on comments, all comments that have a user vote total will have the points and timestamp get shifted up a bit for some reason. A while back I noticed an something similar happening but it was for comments from posters who had a profile picture that wouldn't load for whatever reason. The issue was no longer reproducible before I reported. Here's a screenshot, of the current issue, for reference.

Bug Report

Describe the issue: The post in question:

https://discuss.tchncs.de/post/53330380

That's the url as connect copied it from my feed view in Connect, but I imagine my experience actually involved the federated copy on Beehaw. [Edit: the tchncs.de link crashes also.] A couple of attempts looked like the app was trying to throw up an error message of some sort, but it crashed back to the launcher so quickly I couldn't read it.

Hey Kuro,

First, thanks for all you do, I'm a big fan.

I wanted to report a new issue (which also was present->patched years ago but came back). Where, when you're viewing an image zoomed in, you used to be able to move the portion the screen displayed, all over, by dragging, and be able to drag to ALL parts of the image while remaining zoomed.

But now, dragging just a fraction seems to always be perceived as an intentional swipe to exit the image viewing experience. Doesn't matter how slow I drag, just exits the image every time.

Anecdotally, I've only noticed this on larger images, and maybe that it's more present on portrait imgs vs landscape ones. Not certain though. This isn't new to v360, but I feel like it started in the past month.

I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S23. Android 13. Connect v 1.0.360 (⬅️ happy 'full circle' release!)

Thanks in advance!

The thumbnail doesn't update after the image URL is changed on edited posts. This also applies to changing the web URL for article posts and the thumbnail for that remaining the cached version. Tapping on the thumbnail will go to the proper image or article; it's just the thumbnail that doesn't update in 366.

EDIT: Uhh and the feeds aren't updating from the cache either? After I posted this, I don't see the post when visiting the Connect community. This issue was definitely introduced recently.

EDIT 2: If you do a thumbnail preview and then tap on the comments/feed name in the menu at the top, the feed/comm will reload but the preview is stuck on screen until the app is reopened. Applies when you're on a feed or in a post and long tap to preview.

Are the brackets in the user vote total necessary? Personally, I think removing them and just having the number alone looks better. On the feed, the brackets kinda stands out to me. In the comments, adding a dot divider between the vote count and points total may help with separating the two but I also think it's fine without. I just think the brackets are unnecessary. But that's me, what's your opinion on this?

~~Changing the sort method without scrolling down will not reload the comments for posts with over 50 comments. It works fine for posts with under 50 comments. And for those over 50, just scroll down and then change for it to work. Odd.~~

~~Your favorites feeds aren't saved when exporting settings.~~

~~Privacy info page in Settings won't load.~~

This post has a cross-post when viewed in the browser but doesn't show it in Connect.

~~The top menu doesn't update after you view a message notification and then swipe to go back to the feed. To remove the icon you need to go back and tap on the mark all read button.~~

It would be nice to be able to create folders to organize saved posts. I have some posts saved for more archival purposes, that I'll very infrequently reference and it's just a long feed I have to scroll through. The filters can help but folders would be a step up for those of us that have accumulated a (un)healthy amount of posts.

16

By default, a downvoted comment has its points highlighted blue while a negative user vote count is orange. Meanwhile, an upvoted comment is also orange. The orange and blue for a down voted comment with a negative user vote count looks mismatched.

I think adding the ability to customize the up/downvote colors would be nice. Particularly for the OCD among us. Or just make the two negative colors the same.

EDIT: Ah, so the thing is, the user vote count used to be green when it was positive. Currently it's all orange regardless of value. If that's just changed to green then I'm fine with that too.

Bug Report

When using the search in the top right and entering text, some of the community results will be displayed on screen as unclickable text before the user selects local/all.

Results should probably be hidden/search after the user selects local/all instead of while the text field is being filled out.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Click search in the top right.
  2. Enter some text into the search field.

My Frontpage feed only shows 3 posts, but my All feed also has only a few posts.

This is not entirely new, sometimes it happens that only a few posts load, but it usuall resolves itself.

Now the app has been in this state all morning.

Is this a Connect thing, or is there maybe something else going on? My feeds look normal when I view them on my computer.

19

I have to say that I love this app. I've tried most apps on Google Play for lemmy, and this is definitely my favourite so far. Thanks for making and maintaining this app!

Now to the issue. There are lots of communities missing in my list of subscriptions in this app. When I go to the community page I can still tap "join" although I have already joined. It seems like the app won't refresh what communities I'm subscribed to. I guess there's a bug related to automaticaly fetching subscriptions. Can I do it manually somehow?

It just started happening today where everything including the sidebar is tiny.

Bug Report

Describe the issue:

The font size of the comments appears to be random (see attached screenshot).

The global and comment font size settings don't seem to have any effect.

It doesn't seem to correlate with comment length, depth, age, score, or any other variable I can think of.

I just updated the app and it's still happening.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open a post's comments.
  2. Scroll. Unfold folded comments.
  3. Notice the rich variety of font sizes.
  4. Struggle to read the smaller ones because you're not as young as you used to be.

For the last few days, attempting to change profiles puts the app in a loading icon state for minutes. It used to take less than 3 seconds.

Mbin magazines (and probably users, haven't checked) aren't being tagged: https://feddit.uk/comment/22393959

Also the report bug option is throwing up an error, maybe I've worn it out 🤣

(edit: I see comments aren't tagged as anything either)

Bug Report

Describe the issue: I'm having issues with the community picker on the "new post" page again. This time typing in "world" is not showing !world@lemmy.world.

If I search for "world" in the sidebar it comes up as the first option! (this was my workaround)

Steps to reproduce:

  1. New post
  2. Type in "world" in the community picker
  3. Scroll through the options - there is no "world@lemmy.world" and I couldn't find the correct incantation to get it to appear.
