firstly happy new year for all.

I need to start use Matrix to talk with my biggest friends and colleagues of my university, but i read is good not create an account on matrix.org and create an account in others public servers , to not centralize the matrix protocol. My question is if anyone has a good experience with others public servers, besides matrix.org. Any tip or advice?

I found this servers on joinmatrix with longstanding: https://tchncs.de/en/matrix | https://syscom.utwente.io/info/matrix/homeserver/ | https://matrix-help.envs.net/ | https://tedomum.net/service/matrix/ | https://rollenspiel.chat/ ...

Which one should i choose, any tip?

I decided to bite the bullet and switch from dendrite to conduit as many of you have suggested. The only problem is I cannot get my calls to connect. It just says "call connecting..." But never does. I figured it was a turn server issue but if I type in the secret key wrong in my config file calls don't pop up at all. So it is connecting to it to some extent.

I have no idea why dendrite just works with the coturn config setup yet when I apply the exact same methodology with the conduit config file it doesn't connect calls at all but seems to still connect to the turn server.

For my turn server I am using a debian digital ocean droplet. It was working perfectly for dendrite yet does not want to function with conduit.

Any help is appreciated!

EDIT: I am using a combo of element and element x. On element x android (grapheneos) there is no notification for a call. No pop up or anything. On Element android (grapheneos) there is a popup but the call will not connect.

EDIT 2: I am starting to believe it is coturn. I just don't know how I am supposed to configure it any different than dendrite. I was starting to believe maybe conduit isn't reading the config at all. However, it configured the registration key properly. if the secret key is wrong element won't receive notifications either. I have tried altering my coturn.conf on my vps but to no avail.

EDIT 3: so it seems I can join the call on element x. Even though their is no popup indicating I am recieving a call I can go into the chat and click the call button. Once I do I can connect and talk no problem. Maybe the turn server is working after all. (One phone on mobile the other on my home wifi). I judt don't know why regular element won't connect.

EDIT 4: the notification bug in element x seems to be coming from an error with ntfy. I did a notification test in the app and it came up with an error on: "test push gateway" and "test push loop back"

The error for both is:

Http 500

EDIT 5: I think the error has something to do with my conduit server not trusting my ntfy server but I don't know how to fix that.

EDIT 6: Is Conduit just not compatible with the original element client?

I have been reading about the new OIDC system (since Element now has a QR code login). I can't seem to understand the purpose of it, as it seems that Matrix already has all of the features wanted, but more simple. Why would there need to be a new OIDC system, if signing in with services with Google or GitHub is already supported and configurable per homeserver? Why would regular user+password login need to be reimplemented, but now require a website to login instead of being able to login through something like a terminal?

I'm relatively new to using Matrix, so far I've given Element and Fluffy Chat a try. I've preferred Fluffy Chat so far, I dunno it kinda just seems more reliable and I like the mobile app, but I was wondering if there's any others that are worth checking out. I mainly use Linux, Windows, and iOS.

Is this a setting in element? Is this a feature of matrix?

Is this possibly a permission of my GrapheneOS?

Thank you all for the help this will be my last post! :)

I have been hearing that matrix dendrite is no longer being worked on (at least unless people volunteer). I know that you cannot use element x which isn't a big loss for me. I only plan to use it for family, friends, possibly friends and family of friends.

The big loss for me would be in the privacy category of things.

I have tried getting synapse to work but only managed to have it work with sqlite3 database. I don't know how to get it to communicate properly with my postgres database for some reason. (I am using docker on ubuntu).

What's up, I'm new to matrix and have just been getting into it, I'm trying to replace discord with it. When prompted to make an account I stupidly chose the "continue with google" option. This didn't seem like such a big deal at first, but now as far as I can tell it's impossible for me to sign in on my phone. The element client on IOS doesn't have an option to continue with google, and since I chose that I don't have a password, and I can't make a password without providing my existing password (which I don't have). Does anyone have any ideas? should I just make a new account and start fresh?

Is this a friend request, a space invite, something else? Can I find a description somewhere or am I supposed to get invites from people I know?

Hey. Im thinking about creating matrix client based on telegram. I think their UI/UX is one of the best among messengers. Plus their android app is open source.

I have to take couple of things in consideration, like: licensing, technical details and some more. Its very possible from the technical perspective and pretty unclear from the licensing/legal perspective (since they could change license any moment or even go private).

In this post i would mostly like to know if open source community even wants anything related to telegram. Not everyone likes it. The project would target mainly open source community and will be public as well.

So the questions: Do you think we would want it? And would you personally try it?

Thank you <3

EDIT: :V If you think its bad idea, please tell me. I see much of positive response (and i feel pretty happy about it), but i have to be real, so if you think im wrong or you see any problems, please speak up :)

EDIT#2: Work has been started :P

I've been trying to use Matrix to replace sites like Discord or Slack. But it seems that if a user creates an invitation-only room in a server, then invited users who are registered on other servers get errors when trying to join. Not very useful error messages either: "Failed to join room". (In my case, I tried creating accounts and rooms at nitro.chat and then at converser.eu, but friends registered at matrix.org don't manage to join).

Quite a let-down. Anyone who's facing the same problem and has maybe managed to solve it?

So I'll keep this brief. I really like Matrix's idea of a decentralized messaging platform, and after thr Telegram CEO got arrested in France, some friends are feeling iffy about staying there.

The main point of friction I'm encountering, however, is that whenever anyone goes and looks at Matrix and looks through available public servers to join, they're pretty quickly coming across some very undesirable rooms, to put it tactfully. Are there any ways that I could limit their visibility or ability to interact with those rooms? Server listing sites that make an effort to avoid listing those kinds of rooms, ways to block a room from showing up when you search within the client, etc? Currently we're running matrix.org accounts and using Element for PC/Android, to keep things simple.

It used to be extremely flimsy and unstable but more recently it actually runs pretty well. I can actually use my self hosted server now. It doesn't crash when I join a larger room.
