Whither Reddit? In the meantime, here’s a place to chat up old school revival (OSR) and new school revolution (NSR) style TTRPGs.

My name is Todd aka Hexed Press and I am the current caretaker (have I always been the caretaker?). Here are some other places to find me, if you are so inclined:

Every 6 months or so this comes up on these OSR Discussion Groups.

I just want to say there is at least 1 Old Skewl Game With No Thieves and No Clerics in a Fantasy Setting

The Fantasy Trip - Yes there is a Thief Skill and Physiker Skill

but no Clerics or Thieves as D&D presents.

The game has been around and played since 1981

From controversial publishers and exiled pundits to belligerent posts in facebook groups somtimes it seems to be impossible to swing a cat in the Old School scene without running into agressive and exclusionary rhetoric. As fan of all the wonderful aspects of OSR style games I am concerned with what I see as a worm in our otherwise delicious apple. I am interested in anyone elses thoughts on this situation, I apologize now If this post leaves anyone feeling called out or atttacked. I just want to start a little conversation about our culture.

One thing I'm starting to dislike running OSR adventures is the insane amount of treasure and magical items that you find. In addition, the more I read the DMG, the more I feel they were just too generous with treasure and had to come up of endless ways of spending it (training, upkeep, research, rust monsters, disenchanters, etc.).

Basically, Napoleon invented the term and it got into the RPG scene because of our napoleonic wargaming origins.

Here I am arguing against the split into the various sub "camps" of current RPG culture. I used to believe in this divide, too, but now I'm convinced the differences are just talked up and don't really exist except as tags, not inherently better or worse than tags such as "solo", "rules lite", "gonzo" and all the other ways of splitting it up. The tags remain important for some people to "find their crowd" but that's far weaker than saying that these are the most important splits in RPG culture.

My actual favourite category would actually be "64 pages or less for rules, setting and adventure"! 😅

Chris McDowall, of Bastionland and Into The Odd fame, did a livestream covering a lot of his favorite blogs, some I knew of and a few of which I didn’t. Thought it might be of value to the community.

Does anyone else have any favorite hobby blogs of theirs?

Hey all,

Happy Friday! In about 12 minutes, I'll be streaming across YT and other platforms reading stuff from the OSR and greater TTRPG community and chatting about it! Come hop in if you have the time!

It is important to design systems and mechanics that set up consistent tone and mood.

Respectfully: I disagree.

I think gods and immortals should not be participating in this debate. :)

I’m looking for an old blog post that had a great visual chart on action types and their potential consequences. Anybody recall anything that might fit the bill? If so, drop me a link!

A bummer to read. Dr. Holmes’s material deserved better treatment.

[Summary:

Today is an in-depth look at the origins of Dungeons and Dragons, and the famous (and not so) D&D clones that came after. We go over some outstanding innovations that D&D introduced to a mainstream audience. This took forever, a lot of these games are really old and poorly documented. please give it a shot. ]

OP Note: this was one of the highest effort videos we put together, but mostly went under the radar. I won't be posting any more OC to keep with the spirit of not using this space to promote my own works, but I found out about a bunch of cool games and overall some history on the ttrpg space that I think others would enjoy too.

Milestone! (lemm.ee)

Hey gang, I saw that we’ve got over 175 folks subscribed to the community (small steps for mankind but giant steps for us) and we’re now the third largest community on Lemm.ee!

Welcome aboard everyone! Let’s keep the positivity and good conversation going! I love that folks are initiating new conversations and taking part with excellent comments, links, and discussion!

One thing I have seen a bit of is downvoting. I know it’s probably a foolish errand to even ask this, and with federation, the height of futility, but can we try to use downvotes to express that a topic or comment is inappropriate or out of place and not that we disagree or just don’t like it? Let’s try to rid ourselves of some our bad habits from Reddit and not carry them forward.

That said, I couldn’t be more happy and proud of everyone here for coming in and lending a hand to build this community up in these early days!

Game on!

Sigh! Is there saving the Bard Class? So much has gone wrong since D&D 3rd Edition. I place a lot of blame on Paladium Fantasy for bringing in Clowns, Jugglers, and Knife Throwers.

I have been decieved far to many times. I don't play my Bard's like that.
Facepalm!

I'm sure some point down the line a player will talk me into giving Bards another chance.

Until then you are just a regular character with a song skill & a high Charisma.

First I tagged in all the named and known NPCs, mapping them to the Punnet Square; who will openly support and/or aid the party, who will oppose them openly and similarly who will support or oppose them covertly.
