Talk about whatever with fellow Saskatchewians.

You also could use https://lemmy.ca/c/chatter if you want to talk with lemmy.ca folks in general

I made this community because it was missing (and the more communities we have the better) but I really don't want to moderate it alone.

Does anyone have any interest in joining me?

Matt McClain, a petroleum analyst with GasBuddy, said predicted prices could reach about $1.50 a litre by the end of the week – a forecast that had some people changing their plans.

. . .

With volatility tied to global events and uncertainty about how long the conflict could last, drivers said they were bracing for the possibility that this week’s jump wouldn’t be the last.

So I have been moving all of my things off of US servers (best I can), I was paying Apple $1 something I was fine with it to save my pictures. I recently thought maybe Tim Cook was melting down my loonies to make a gold coloured butt plug for Trump. I have moved a lot of the things to Canadian servers but only one of them I can say with certainty is not on AWS. One of the things will be coming up for renewal soon as I cannot find any real information about their use of AWS I need to find alternatives.

I have been running more and more home lab things to stop using US services and block ads, typically hosted by the google. I found immich and have got it set up, but doing so I have seen a lot of my pictures saved on my devices and thought I would share this.

I am doing a little self promoting with a bunch of letters I sent off to the government of Saskatchewan because the Legislative Assembly got back to me.

Dear Ms. Legge,

Thank you for your letter of February 7, 2026 to the Legislative Library, regarding the use of social media channels.

In 2026-2027 the Legislative Assembly Service of Saskatchewan (LAS) is planning to review public engagement processes and strategies, including the role of social media. Your comments will be considered as part of that work.

As a non-partisan organization, the LAS does not determine or influence the communication methods used by elected officials. Based on the details you provided, it appears that you have contacted the appropriate representatives directly.

Thank you once again for taking the time to write.

Kind regards,

Telecom giant Bell Canada plans to build an "AI data centre campus" south of Regina, according to documents filed with the Rural Municipality of Sherwood.

The documents filed with the RM of Sherwood propose rezoning a parcel of land measuring approximately 160 acres (65 hectares).

So today I wrote a bunch of emails to different agencies and my MLA’s office to try and get Saskatchewan politicians off of Twitter, BlueSky, and YouTube in place of Mastadon and PeerTube.

Edit: I got an email back from the conflict of interest commissioner saying they do not have the ability to do anything, unless it is brought forward in the legislature, I am considering forwarding this off to my MLA’s office. I sent different letters off to different agencies but they look a lot the same. I had another edit written for another activism project I am working on with the Federal government, similar to this one. I have 3 going on at once, even for a very active activist I think 3 is a little much. Two is probably to many at one time but hey I did not know until I tried.

Address City, province postal code Your email Date

Dear Commissioner,

I am writing as a concerned Saskatchewan resident regarding the use of US-owned social media platforms, specifically X, BlueSky, and YouTube, by elected officials for public and official communication.

Recent reports indicate that X has been using artificial intelligence to generate child sexual abuse material and other forms of illegal pornography. BlueSky, on the other hand, has been selling user data to US-based data brokers. The continued use of these platforms by politicians raises serious ethical, reputational, and governance concerns for Saskatchewan officials and the institutions they represent.

When politicians maintain accounts on these platforms, citizens who interact with them may have their personal information collected, processed, and stored outside of Canada, exposing them to foreign jurisdiction and creating risks to public trust. The continued use of X by some Saskatchewan politicians raises particular ethical and data‑sovereignty risks. I recommend that these accounts be removed and that all politicians evaluate their social media policies to ensure alignment with Canadian standards for responsible governance and ethical conduct.

Similarly, politicians should consider moving away from YouTube and other US-hosted platforms and explore Canadian alternatives, including the possibility of establishing Saskatchewan-based Mastodon, Lemmy, and PeerTube servers to host social media and video content locally and securely.

I respectfully request that your office review the ethical and governance implications of elected officials using US-owned social media platforms and provide guidance or recommendations to ensure politicians’ practices reflect responsible, ethical, and transparent communication standards.

Encouraging the use of Canadian-hosted, open-source platforms would reduce reliance on foreign services, improve public trust, and strengthen the ethical standards of government communications.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I would appreciate any guidance or action your office can provide.

Sincerely, Reann Legge I use the pronouns she/her

“If we’re able to take some of this money that’s been used for evil and not good, and repurpose it to reduce some of our costs, then I think that that’s a good thing,” acting Regina police chief Lorilee Davies told reporters on Wednesday.

Now just imagine if they used the money to help the disadvantaged people instead, they could lower crime that way.

Federated classifieds marketplace

Every time I post something for sale on Craigslist/Kijiji/FB I get reminded that this is a use case we should be able to handle. We could also offer a non-profit alternative for wider audiences instead of generating revenue for Meta. It could also serve as another channel for new users to our Fediverse, people not necessarily interested in social media alternatives. The American corporate services won't be getting any better over time so an alternative is likely to be needed.

This project seems to be implementing a federated marketplace. If a Fedecaner finds themselves with even more time to donate than they already have and a similar desire, maybe that could be the next service to standup. :D

Thoughts?

According to the FCAA, the scam uses fake social media posts claiming that Mark Carney and Danielle Smith are endorsing an online investment platform known as AllRealGroup, or AllReal Investments Pty Ltd.

...

The FCAA advised prospective investors to get a second opinion and seek professional advice about investments and to avoid allowing unknown or unverified individuals remote access to any of your devices.

“Never make an investment decision based on a notable figure endorsement,” the authority added in a statement.
