After 16 years of battling right wing populism the coastal elites thought a unity ticket would save their status. They put John Tyler on The William Henry Harrison ticket and were rewarded with the annexation of pro slavery Texas and giving the slave states the final upper hand until the civil war.

After 4 years of Civil war the northern elites felt a unity ticket would save the Union war efforts. They put Andrew Johnson on the ticket, who quickly re established the planter hierarchy in the south.

I’d argue Truman was a unity ticket, and I’d argue the Cold War was bad for America, but I don’t think a moderate democrat would agree.

regardless, these centrist types constantly amaze me in their unyielding love for a country they know nothing about.

It is the aesthetic of seriousness and moderation they crave, the ability to look and seem professional and educated independent of any substantive proof that they are. This fakery is unveiled whenever you see a Celebrity Jeopardy episode where the news anchors/political commentators get demolished by comedians, even though the anchors appear way more put together and well read than the comedians do.

A lot of the Ivy grad pmc centrists don't know shit about shit, they just know the style choices, catchphrases, and speaking cadences that will get them clocked as thoughtful and competent by the layperson, while letting them ward off questions from smart people that actually probe their depth of knowledge.

My personal theory is once you finally realize that everything you were ever taught was nonsense the “trying to appear put together” nonsense also goes out the window.
