if you need a fun distraction for the hour, might I suggest Shapez?

it's a simple-to-learn, hard-to-master game in which you build on previous skills to solve puzzles; you use little factory bits to extract shapes from the map and send them to the hub.

the puzzle part is that you have to deliver the required shapes exactly (orientation, color, etc) and deal with different rates of input and output from various components. to do this, you will use reading, deductive and spatial reasoning, creativity, and eventually, math and color theory.

further explanationthat sounds complicated (and it can be!), but it is presented so simply and elegantly that children can play it. some readers might need help at times with the directions, but the illustrations and simple language make them relatively unchallenging.

even my elderly mother with dementia was into it. idk if she will be able to play much beyond the first couple levels because it starts involving rotational orientation in a way she's not capable of processing anymore, but it's cool that she could follow something that I find so engaging that I've lost hours of sleep playing it.

where to playyou can play it free in your browser at Shapez.io, and there are free phone apps, too. I bought it through Steam, where it's usually $1 (!!! ๐Ÿคฉ) and I've gotten so much entertainment mileage out of that dollar.

phone/touchscreen interface thoughtsI found using my finger to control things instead of a mouse pretty frustrating, but a stylus would probably be small enough to have fine control. I didn't try because I sincerely do not need the ability to enjoyably play that game on my phone too ๐Ÿ˜… I would be late to everything and never get anything done.

๐Ÿค” maybe I shouldn't suggest this, everyone who plays is going to lose track of that hour so fast and this place will be a ghost town when it comes back up
