I don't know if I'll be able to respond to all of this and I suppose most of it isn't relevant to me as I will consider returning to the admin team and even to continue making announcements here and there but I am going to step away from decision-making. I brought these mods onto the team, I set up the decision-making process, I drafted the statement and made the final edit on the follow-up comment. I believe there needs to be accountability and me allowing the old & new admins to take the site forward is an appropriate consequence.

I don't care too much about the other lemmy admins, almost all hate me anyway. I thought if I could take a chance to get a community closed that harassed another admin comrade into leaving the platform entirely I needed to take it.

[-] CARCOSA@hexbear.net 10 points 3 hours ago

That is very kind of you to say but I don't think I was ever a captain as much as a mouthpiece

[-] CARCOSA@hexbear.net 11 points 3 hours ago

I did not intend to be a fall guy, more so I am responsible and stepping back from decision making is a valid consequence

[-] CARCOSA@hexbear.net 15 points 3 hours ago

I'm opening to return, but I will not be the head admin (I never was!)

[-] CARCOSA@hexbear.net 13 points 3 hours ago

But we got back the original top mod @TransComrade69@hexbear.net

[-] CARCOSA@hexbear.net 23 points 3 hours ago

I'm willing to if the site wants me to

[-] CARCOSA@hexbear.net 30 points 3 hours ago

High praise from you, I am open to returning if the users & mod/admin team want me to but I am stepping away from admin level decision making.

[-] CARCOSA@hexbear.net 34 points 3 hours ago

Thank you that is kind of you to say, but I assure you I am very abnormal

Hello everyone, I want to personally apologize for how I handled this change.

During my time as an admin I made the decision to shift decision-making from a group of admins admin to all the moderators. My reasoning is that the barrier to entry for a hexbear account to become a moderator was pretty low, and we have a 90% acceptance rate for applicants. Therefore, a mod collective is going to be the users most interested in shaping the site.

The reason that I made this post and I edited down the discussion to the comment below is to protect any mods from harassment. Not everyone is open to defending their thoughts against the userbase and I didn't think they should have to as long as one of us was willing to engage with this post. I personally agreed with the mod sentiment that this change could be a chance to improve the site but did not mind the dunk/dredge tanks however it was a majority of mod team members that voted in favor of this change during the week+ that this change was discussed & voted on.

I recognize I could have done multiple aspects of this better and I think it is clear from the discussion of this change that it was not the right approach.

Another admin will be putting up a second discussion post for what we will do after some time with the current change. Closing the tanks will be permanent but the decision on if we will be opening a spiritual successor to exist alongside gossip and counterprop has not been made.

The screenshot circulating in this thread of my statement in the lemmy instance admin chat was an attempt by me to get the drama communities on other instances closed, ultimately a failure on multiple counts.

With all that being said, I would like to thank everyone for their input and state that I will be stepping down as admin as a result of my mistakes in facilitating the discussion, executing the change, and communicating with the userbase.

Hello users of Hexbear, we wanted to inform you that we are going to be locking the_dunk_tank and dredge_tank communities. We have created two new communities /c/gossip and /c/counterpropaganda to serve a similar but clearly distinct purpose than the dunk/dredge tanks.

Not only is the dunk tank a term that has racist origins, but also many posts there were almost no effort and often times requiring later edits to show how they weren't reactionary, ~~not useful with regard to developing rhetoric and furthering dialectical analysis of that which we dunk upon~~.

To that end, we wish posts of reactionaries to be placed in !counterpropaganda@hexbear.net along with an accompanying explanation (as simple or complex as desired) with the intent of countering the reactionary propaganda in the post body, as of now comments are not subject to the same ~~rhetorical rigor~~ rule.

For the posts ~~that are not "low-hanging fruit'~~ of notable people we ask that you use !gossip@hexbear.net .

These changes are mainly part of a continued effort to remove the racist and misogynistic elements from our community and grow.

Any moderators of the dunk tank or dredge tank that want to be a mod in the new communities let me know.

Any users with questions or comments please use this post, this change was made at the behest of the entire Hexbear mod and admin team. We will be looking for more moderators in an organized volunteer drive shortly, if you wish to submit an application you may send it to me via hexbear or matrix direct messages.

Use this post as a place for discussion to these changes. We will keep things as they are for 2 weeks and then reflect on the feedback, including this post: https://hexbear.net/post/3858346

As a personal addendum I am sorry if ~~the closing of the tanks~~ these changes removes a beloved space on the site and if you want to suggest a community to replace them you may do so at !commrequest@hexbear.net or submit a mod application to take a more active role in shaping the site.

Sitewide or community changes come from proposals put forth from the mod team, discussed, and voted on by the mod team.

Any users wanting to suggest a community to replace the tanks, may do so at !commrequest@hexbear.net current discussion is here https://hexbear.net/post/3858346 or submit a mod application to take a more active role in shaping the site.

You may also consider using !shitreactionariessay@lemmygrad.ml as a substitute for dunk/dredge tank posts as well

The mod statement can be found here: https://hexbear.net/comment/5613033

Hello users of hexbear, we have started discussions with an admin of lemmy.ca regarding potential refederation. Lemmy.ca had added hexbear to their blocklist about a year ago: https://lemmy.ca/post/3326347

With the recent changes in lemmy features as well as a maturing fediverse the mods/admins of hexbear and lemmy.ca are open to trying again, but before we put lemmy.ca on our allow-list we wanted to open up discussion and voting to the users of hexbear.

This vote will be binding with regard to adding lemmy.ca to our allow-list. In addition, the idea of including sh.itjust.works in this discussion was raised but was voted down by a majority of mods from inclusion.

https://lemmy.ca/c/canada and https://lemmy.ca/c/pcgaming are the instance's top two communities but there are a few other small, niche communities. A community that may be removed from hexbear is the https://lemmy.ca/c/fediverselore so please indicate your opinion on this community if you have one.

As usual please use

dean-smile if you would like lemmy.ca to be added to our allow-list

dean-frown if you would like lemmy.ca to not be added to our allow-list

We will leave this post unlocked for a few days before making the decision, thank you. Users may also use this post for a general discussion on federation including naming instances for federation/defederation or feedback for the hexbear admin/mod team.

submitted 11 months ago by CARCOSA@hexbear.net to c/main@hexbear.net

Hello users of hexbear after some discussion we mainly wanted to get your thoughts on the two pinned megathreads, one general and one news.

We've noticed that the news mega has basically become the general mega and the general mega has kinda slowed. Some are thinking that it might be time to tell people to stop posting random shit to the news mega because some appreciate the ever so slightly more serious, focused tone of the news mega

As of now there is not much of a standard for comments however we wanted to discuss with you regarding making a change. Where the news megathread is for discussion on current events and their history/implications for future while the general megathread is for commenting on one's life, interests, or for shit-posting.

This would result in the news megathread being more heavily moderated to actively remove comments that are a better fit for the general megathread or off topic.

Please comment with any thoughts, opinions, comments, questions, or concerns.

What is Hexbear? (hexbear.net)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by CARCOSA@hexbear.net to c/hexbear@hexbear.net

My answer:

When chapotraphouse was banned on reddit many mods and users came together to create a space on a link aggregator platform.

Choosing lemmy the original admin and developer team decided to fork it for various reasons. About a year ago, sustained effort was taken to upstream many of the forked features so that we could rebase with current version lemmy and federate.

Over the years hexbear has become a non-sectarian social media space for sharing news, memes, links, posts and comments with each other as the mods endeavour to make the space welcoming to marginalized people.
