Is there anywhere I can catch up on the lore of the first 20 games? I don't want to go into this one and not understand any of the plot.
You can skip 1-4. BS5 is a relatively short game but features a lot of flashbacks of the first four. The problem with the flashbacks is that they happen while you're driving so hit the brake ASAP or you're going to hit a lot of pedestrians.
The next few are a slow descent into substance abuse.
BS10-12 cover hitting rock bottom and rehab.
Pretty vanilla after that
The mid-teens, BS13 to BS 17 were all rail replacement services. Not the most accessible so you can just skip them all.
Rail Replacement Bus Simulator sounds like an exclusive launch title for the Buttertendo
