They don't want to play innocent. They want to go farther. Just remember, innitially the nazis didn't think of extermination camps. In the begining they just deported the Jews. The issue was they'd deport Jews, the Jews would be sent out of Germany, and then a year later Germany would take over more land. So they'd deport them again, but then they'd take MORE land. And they kept finding and deporting the same Jewish populations.
That's when they said they needed a final solution. Because it's never about appeasement. Nothing will ever be enough. It's always about more. It's always about taking more land, more power, more everything.
So if trump announced he was bringing slavery back, his base wouldn't have a moment of self realization. They wouldn't take a step back and admit they were wrong. They'd fucking cheer. They wouldn't feel empathy. They'd feel empowered.
