Fumiko Kaneko sits on her knees wearing a striped kimono with her hands clasped in front of her, staring intently ahead. c. 1925, author unknown [Wikipedia]
Fumiko Kaneko, born on this day in 1903, was a Japanese anarchist, nihilist, and opponent to Japanese imperialism in Korea. Fumiko is perhaps best remembered for her "The Prison Memoirs Of A Japanese Woman", written while imprisoned after being convicted of high treason against the Japanese government.
Together, Fumiko and her Korean partner Pak Yol published two magazines which highlighted the problems Koreans faced under Japanese imperialism and showed influences of their radical politics. Sometime between 1922 and 1923, they also established a group called "F"utei-sha (Society of Malcontents)", which Fumiko identified as a group for direct action against the government.
These activities soon brought Pak and Fumiko under government scrutiny. In September 1923, the Japanese government therefore made a number of arrests, mostly Koreans, on limited evidence, and among those arrested were Pak and Fumiko.
After lengthy judicial proceedings, Fumiko and Pak were convicted of high treason for attempting to obtain bombs with the intention of killing the emperor or his son. They were both sentenced to life in prison, however Fumiko allegedly committed suicide in her cell in 1926.
Here is a short excerpt from one of Fumiko's interrogations while imprisoned (text by Max Res from theanarchistlibrary.org):
Q: Your class?
A: A divine commoner.
Q: How are you employed?
A: My job is tearing down everything that currently exists.

Are you liking the new patch? I feel like when I first started playing (monitor lizard meta) I had a much better win rate than this patch without ever playing meta boards. Last patch I was winning left and right but I usually was forcing infinites so it was expected. It feels like in the current one there's a ton of interesting and powerful off-meta boards to try, but I get smoked days 1-8 because I'm just generally falling behind, even when there isn't a huge identifiable meta. Did people just get that much better in 3 weeks' time?
I much prefer it to last patch, where getting an infinite online was so essential yet boringly formulaic. This patch I think focusing on winning early has been helpful for me. Like building "good stuff" on those early days so you can survive to ball out. There are some runs where you'll just sputter out and die where it feels like there was nothing you could do.
Also now that I can see people's rating in ranked I get angry to be facing legend tier players. Reynad I don't care if cod youtubers hate sbmm getting dumpstered by massively better players isn't fun![emoji maddened maddened](https://hexbear.net/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hexbear.net%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2Fc56a5e78-b281-4da8-9d97-5499d884b378.png)
Yeah that's kinda true, but I feel like when I go for "good stuff" I tend to be spread too thin to really get one over someone with bigger numbers.
I don't mind the matchmaking at all TBH. I think the difference between good players and bad players in the Bazaar is just consistency in avoiding mistakes and having as dynamic a playstyle as possible, so playing against better players than me means I'm going up against more creatively executed boards (which could still be meta boards, but usually what makes a good player better than me is that they'll execute their run much more carefully to get the meta board online at the right time without losing tempo). Since it's not like a shooter game or an RTS where bad players can simply never compete against good players, I really don't mind getting smoked by legends every now and then.
