The mission-style Taco Bell in south Scottsdale is closing after nearly six decades.
The location, Taco Bell #31, was one of the first to open in the 1960s.
Glen Bell opened his first store in California in 1962 in Downey, Calif. Bell owned a hamburger joint called Bell's Hamburgers before opening his first taco shop, Taco Tia, in 1954. He sold hard shell tacos (many say were inspired by the tacos dorados sold at the adjacent Mexican restaurant) for just $0.19 each.
The south Scottsdale location is one of the country's few mission-style Taco Bell stores left and operates 24 hours a day. It was also the first place to launch the 2024 Decades Menu.
When a Taco Bell fan posted the news on Instagram, actor Joel McHale commented: "That should be put in the Smithsonian. Every brick."
Alyssa Knierim wrote: "Trading character for a cookie cutter box. What a downgrade"
Though the old shop is closing, it's being replaced by a more modern restaurant next door.
According to staff, the historic shop will close on April 12, which is the same day the new location is scheduled to open.
Details: 7847 E. McDowell Road, Scottsdale.
