A weaker central government? But they took away rights from states after they formed?

The one most important to the Confederacy, the right to regulate slavery, yes.

However, the overall system of the CSA was very... state-oriented, and governors ran their states like private fiefs, and like feudal lords, often in defiance of the central government whenever it didn't suit them.
