I don't prefer cars but trying to travel with 2 small kids and a dog and my partner has made me realize some lifestyle require cars at least for some trips.

That said I still try to walk every day. I'm within walking distance to a store and a park so that means I rarely have to use the car in those cases. I have to agree with your conclusion. Get services closer to residents. Still support cars but far far less.
