Some schools called this a playground ball but we called it a “utility ball” where I went and anyway the smaller version could also be boobies

Oh weird, I've never heard either of those. I only remember it being called a kickball (even when not being used in the game Kickball).

Dang now I wonder what a map would look like with these various terms corresponding to different regions and whatnot

I looked yesterday after commenting and didn't have any luck finding one.

They were called foursquare balls, too. I don’t think anyone plays that game anymore.

Edit: quick look around online and some are indeed called “foursquare” balls.
