I don’t know about the US, but the parents of my peers (East Germany) recalled that the fathers were actively discouraged to enter the delivery room.

I have family in Frankfurt und Bad Hersfeld, Germany who will absolutely agree with you, but this happened in the USA.

These guys were born in 1988, a time when movies like Mrs. Doubtfire and Tootsie and and and were showing how men can be different; to be better. The lines between parental jobs were absolutely in the process of being blurred and their Dads were either idiots or unavailable.
