Explanation: During WW1, the unprecedented mass-mobilization of troops led to severe food shortages and rationing in all countries - but Germany especially. While German sources condemn the British blockade - and it is certain that it had a serious effect - one might suspect that being at war with all the countries you used to trade with and drafting your farmers might also be a contributor.
