I guess we’re going to have to wait and find out either way - but based on Vince Gilligan’s previous works, in just how everything is methodically and intentionally put together - I choose to err on the side of expecting there to be a strong underlying consistency.
The only downside of this stance is that I’m going to be much more disappointed than you, if it all falls apart! 😅
As for Them not doing any experimentation (e.g. anechoic chambers), I think that would be more a case of it not being relevant just yet - and Them potentially hiding it (and similar potential attack vectors) from Carol in fear of it being exploited. They’ve already shown a willingness to leave certain topics vague, based on potential negative sentiments (e.g. HDP).
I'm not familiar with X-files but BCS and BB didn't have to have internally consistent supernatural phenomenon. Character driven storytelling seems to be VG's specialty and that's why I would accept a handwavily explanation to SOME of this. But I'm with you in hoping for a greater level of nerdy details.
