Explanation: After the stunning Roman defeat at Cannae by the great Carthaginian general Hannibal, Macedonia (and Syracuse in Sicily) joined the Carthaginian side, sensing weakness on the part of the Roman Republic.

They were wrong, of course, but Rome would have to engage in diplomatic and military maneuvering to contain Macedonia while the Second Punic War raged, adding another challenge to an already-perilous war.
