Thank you for the clarification. The way I see things it is a military alliance for sure, but defense is the pretext. Let's keep in mind that the military spending is called Defense Budget. Even the US who has waged too many offensive wars all over the world last century (as well as being actively involved in so many more, and in political coups that used military) call it this way.

So it makes me wonder: defense of what actually?

NATO is not an arm of the US Military. It is the combined military power of all its members. The only time the articles of NATO were used was 9/11 and since there was no target nation there was no NATO response. The USA did go to war with Iraq under Republican George Bush, and some allied nations did provide support, but several NATO members not only rejected the request but even opposed the invasion altogether.

If NATO does nothing then you have to wonder why so many violent and militaristic people want it gone? Why Putin refuses to sign any peace treaties which includes Ukraine membership in NATO? Because it prevents war.
