Why does it matter what the regime says? Does anyone actually still believe them? It's such an obvious lie, they're almost flexing how much power they have that they can say something so incorrect.
It matters because it shows 1) what they think they can get away with, and 2) suggests how much further they're willing to go.
It matters because, yes, some of them do. And many pay zero attention to the news so whatever soundbite they do hear often becomes officially what happened in their minds.
