Wow, that must be a first in history. I'm not in tune with Portuguese politics at all, but the far-right candidate must be real bad to cause this to happen.
Well, I'd say it depends on how you rate a candidate "bad".
IMHO, people here are just afraid of voting on what they consider an extremist.
The problem is that they will (keep) voting on the far left. So no change here to be seen. People just like getting screwed over and over.
Pretty simple. Right wing = bad. Extreme right wing = extremely bad.
It there any meaningful far-left in Portugal?
There used to be. Fortunately the worse are almost gone, as well as the communists.
When I say the worse I mean the ones that say the government has to give them everything, tax anything that moves and promote the dependency of the state to live.
Now this Seguro guy, he used to be a member of the socialist party (PS) and this party works in a very weird way, all of the above is true, with the addition of a LOT of corruption.
There's a lot of financial illiteracy and it's not a priority of the government to change that.
For instance, salaries are negotiated mostly after taxes, because people just care about how much they'll get at the end of the month, not caring how much they'll be paying in taxes, how much goes for social security, etc. So if a guy says "salaries much go up", "rent prices must go down" , The added toll on employers also goes up, as they need to raise prices on goods and services to pay for higher salaries.
For rents for example, 28% goes to the state. Mortgages are crazy high because of the rising Euribor rates, but at the end of the day, landlords not only have to get a positive outcome, but also need to make some money to account for maintenance, insurance, property tax, etc.
This is true in many countries, of course, but if a mortgage is 700€ and the average salary is around 1000€ after taxes, you know where this goes...
There was a very good candidate but he just got the 3rd place. Reason for that is he wanted to explain things to people and show how things work in real life, but since that makes people think, they just go with the ones that tell the people what exactly they want to hear.
