Initial desire to make a utopia in USSR survived exactly until right after the first elections they tried to hold. If Lenin didn't just decide that actually, no, we don't like giving power to the people, I might have had more sympathy.
You are right in that communism is not inherently bad. But also the people trying to implement it didn't really give a fuck about actually getting there.
Good ole Lenin, simultaneously won and defeated the revolution.
