I feel like the movie had character development in at least two of the ancient vampires and one of the new vampires.

The series seemed like just another sitcom. Not terrible, but not as fun as the movie. Unfortunately when you do a sitcom you're constrained by convention in a lot of ways (i.e. it's tougher to make character development.)

There's a worthwhile comparison to the UK and US versions of The Office.
