Tough issue because it absolutely works but this infrastructure could be used by an authoritarian government for dangerous ends. I can't support these cameras in the current political environment. There are other solutions to traffic violence we can push for instead.

These cameras are a bit of a breach of the current social contract. There is a tacit acceptance in most places that 5 over is acceptable. In fact, driving the speed limit is considered inappropriate and will often have a line of vehicles following too close. There is one person who routinely drives around me.

Quietly moving these cameras into these areas results in ticketing everyone for even going one mile over the limit. Sometimes, this just happens, especially on a hill. Most people will just let their cars accelerate and then just slowly decelerate than wear their cars down.

I am all for this tech in a school zone or in properly-designated areas.

The five over norm needs to die if road users wish to live. Everyone drives way too fast on American roads and that's a big reason we're a world leader in traffic fatalities.

But that's not really related to what I was talking about.

Yeah, totally wasn't your point. We are over leveraged for cameras already. Our blue-suited overlords are slavering to have cameras from every angle like England.
