I would say that work has intrinsic value for the worker.
But, that doesn't mean you should allow yourself to be exploited.
Doing things is worth doing for its own sake.
Yeah, I didn't take it to imply exploitation, but there's certainly that potential risk, there.
Doing things for their own sake is legitimate, but I think what this is moreso about is doing a job for survival's sake, and noticing how you fit in to that equation. How it might change you or edify you, or simply give you the sense that it's not the preferred job for you. You'll literally never have a full set of answers to those things unless you actually try it, for better or worse. I believe that's what the quote is really about.
