@mrnobody@quokk.au,
In rounding up my quote collection, I've come to realise something-- that most of the ones I've saved are fairly pointed in nature. They're kind of like directives upon life, often with a leftist ideological / political edge. Not so much funny or philosophical.
The issue as I see it is that funny or philosophical quotes tend to be appreciated by a majority, whilst leftist quotes are going to appeal to a lesser crowd. I think they'd also tend to put the reader in a certain 'mood,' that isn't necessarily compatible with light-hearted enjoyment. What I'm trying to say here is that while I initially started reaching for the leftist quotes (because they're what I believe in), I realised that it's probably better to try to appeal to a more global crowd. I reckon that's especially important when trying to successfully start up a community.
Obviously it's your community and you can do whatever you want with it, but if I have any advice here, it's that I'd recommend aiming for something similar. Imagine what the average crowd is looking for in a quotes section, and try to include a range of quotes to appeal to as many as possible.
In any case, I'm going to try to stock up on quotes that aren't specifically like leftist directives, and go from there...
I have thought about that as well. So far my idea was to get normal quotes by browsing reddit and aiming for a mix of both types, also trying to get some motivational quotes into the mix. Funny quotes are some of the harder ones to find.
My current collection is also heavily built upon Reddit's stuff. Funny quotes do seem to be more limited, there.
There used to be a really tasty, bottled apple juice (called "Elliot's" I think) that had these great, whimsical little quotes on the inside of each bottle cap. I wrote a whole bunch of them down, but have since last the file, dammit. I'll have to search around to see if there's a similar collection online...
