Shitpost was supposed to be the "anything goes" meme community, and a bunch of yahoots took that as "Oh we can post lgbtq hate memes here".

"Anything goes" is such a terrible idea in the modern internet, you're always going to get checked for trying it lol.

Oh for sure. They did still have rules against nsfw and hate speech ofc, as well as the instancewide rules that had to be followed, but mods can only do so much.
