It's more about making the sub useless than it is about making sense. So only posting pics of sexy John Oliver devalues the purpose of a subreddit... Unless that's what people want from now on.
You could also post nothing but pictures of turnips, or windmills, or firehoses. Out of everything that is off-topic, I still don't get why they chose Jon as the off-topic focus.
