I so wish that Apple and Google would clamp down on this kind of rampant data collection abuse. Users should be able to individually block any data collection point with it only breaking anything that fundamentally relies on it. And it should be done such that the app cannot tell that it's being blocked, so as to prevent stupid attempts to build everything to rely on data collection even if it doesn't make any sense.

Neither Apple nor Google will do so of course. Doesn't change that I wish that they would.

They're probably getting a cut of the revenue from this collection.

Is that even possible?? How can the app developer not know?

Let's take location for instance. Google can send to the app no data or the location. The app developers can tell if no data is sent back.

Google would have to develop, on its own against its own financial interests, a way to send random locations to the app. The app develop is going to easily see though that this data is not correct.

So even if Google decided to invest in this for the users, the app developers are still going to know

Even if they did it sure wouldn't be for their apps. Purely by accident of course.

I'm still waiting for some Android Root/ROM dev to come up with an Xposed thing or whatever to just throw a "Lie" button on all the permission requests.
