I turned it off for awhile when it first rolled out, but actually turned it back on.
At the time I worked somewhere that had google backed email, and I received a lot of emails that I didn’t care about, but couldn’t strictly manage. I also received a lot of regular email, too.
Having the auxiliary ‘inboxes’ that I could ignore until I was ready to deal with them was handy.
Now, of course, I have turned off all email notifications from all sources, and use an email forwarding service so no new sites get my ‘actual’ email address, and I’ve unsubscribed from everything I can. If I can’t unsubscribe (or they’ve sold my info) and the service I signed up to has no value, I nuke the address and slip into the darkness.
I could definitely get away with turning it off, but I guess I don’t care about curating my experience for a platform that I just haven’t bothered to replace yet.
