You understand that sayings like this are not literal, right? Michel Holland didn't "sit with Nazis," he was French Resistance. Holland had to find a place to stay on that occasion and was forced to stay with Nazis. The saying doesn't apply to him or his situation. It means choosing to tolerate and hang out with Nazis means the person doing so is also a Nazi, not that anyone in a room with or who helps a Nazi out of necessity is a Nazi.
