This week police impounded 700 sheep, claiming they had passed through a forbidden zone. To retrieve the animals the shepherds paid 150,000 shekels ($40,000) to the settlers' regional council

Legit sounds like an apartheid like behavior

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 44 points 7 months ago

Because that's exactly what it is.

Nah, this is part of genocidal behaviour.

Apartheid forced the people into small areas, such as what was done in Gaza/West Bank. What’s happening now is trying to remove them even from those regions.

Ethnic cleansing is still genocide.

While both are heinous, they are separate acts.

  • Ethnic cleansing is the forced removal of a peoples from an area.
  • Genocide is the removal of a peoples entirely either through killing or erasing culture.

There is generally a large amount of overlap between the two however, which is not helped by the lack of a legal definition of ethnic cleansing. What Israel is currently doing is undoubtedly genocide.

Honestly, they're doing both at the same time, I feel.

[-] Marsupial@quokk.au 6 points 7 months ago

Yeah that's fair.

Apartheid and genocide are not mutually exclusive in the least bit, though.

In fact, having an apartheid system in place already, like Israel does, makes it much easier to successfully carry out genocide.
