I'm still waiting for it to be up to par, I have jellyfin on the server and I check it maybe once a month with the latest version but it still fails miserably with my library.

It's a very clean high organized library managed by sonarr. All Files are in

"series name (year) > Season xx > series name SxxExx (episode title)"

format and yet it still just fails miserably at matching so much of my content (its a rather massive library) especially on anime. Half the time I have to manually match it, and I have to use the Japanese title in order to pull up the English metadata, because that makes sense.

Playback also just... Fails for no reason on tons of my devices. It's been getting better recently but until it's on par with Plex I am not leaving sadly

[-] Fades@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Plex makes it a lot easier for things like hardware encoding and sharing outside of network, but jellyfin needs some work to get there

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee -3 points 7 months ago

If it fails on anime maybe someone (such as yourself) needs to do the leg work and set build a database for it to match against?

[-] LordKitsuna@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Yeah no, i don't have the time I've got my own shit to do. My Plex system is almost entirely automated. Ombi let's me request a show with a single tap, sonarr finds it from my sources, sends that to transmission, then once it's download imports it and puts symlinks with proper naming into the library folders. And then plex properly matches up the metadata.

You know that product you don’t like and have a fine, working alternative for?

You should do hundreds of hours of volunteer work to use the product you don’t like, that way it’s slightly less inconvenient.

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

The point stands: open source products are only good because people make them good.

If you want to put your eggs in the closed sourced paid basket, by all means go ahead. Plex will still bite you, eventually, just like every other for profit business does.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 7 months ago

Okay doomer but my media isn’t going anywhere.

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

No, and thank fuck for that. I don't think Plex would end up that bad.

I hope.

Edit: Also it isn't "doomer" to say that for profit businesses almost always end up screwing their users over eventually. Usually it happens after the business is sold.

Plex has already deprecated the original Android app which had a "lifetime" payment.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

i paid for a lifetime subscription in like 2016 and i still use and install apks downloaded direct from the official forums for the android app on my shield. nothing has been deprecated at all.

you can prefer jellyfin, that’s fine, but making stuff up to scare others is just wildass doomer shit.

it’s a media player. if they go under or get too shitty, i’ll use a different media player. for now, and the foreseeable future, plex is miles ahead of the competition.

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

You paid for the main lifetime subscription, I paid for the Android app directly. You paid more than me, but both sales were "lifetime". My app has long since been deprecated, while your Plex Pass still lingers on.

I won't be all that surprised when the "Plex Pass lifetime subscription" ends. It shouldn't, and I hope the legal landscape changes such that it can't (or at least so that sellers are required to define the terms more clearly), but at the moment your lifetime subscription is just as vulnerable as mine was.

This is all a lovely segway into Ross Scott's potential lawsuit against Ubisoft for shutting down The Crew. PCGamer article, original YouTube post. The goal isn't necessarily to win, rather to legally challenge and clearly define the terms under which software is sold.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 7 months ago

you paid for the app that you still have access to, in what way was that deprecated?

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

I don't have access to it anymore. The paid app that gave me the same access as Plex Pass is long gone, it was replaced by a free app that only has full functionality if you pay for a Plex Pass.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 7 months ago

i think you just don’t understand what you bought. you bought access to the android app which you still have.

if it isn’t working that’s an issue for support.

nothing. has. been. deprecated.

why do you insist on talking out of your ass instead of doing the tiniest amount of research?

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

You keep saying I'm wrong when the app I bought is literally not available in the Play Store anymore. If I go through my purchases, it's still there, but greyed out.

The app I bought was removed and replaced by a free app. You are talking out your ass.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

It was replaced with a different app. That app can watch free content but requires a payment to watch personal media.

The app you purchased is literally just the IAP functionality of the app that exists, which if you are using the same account will be available after clicking “restore purchase.” Nothing. Has. Been. Deprecated.

Do I need to explain how accounts work or do you think you can take it from here?

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

It was replaced with a different app. That app can watch free content but requires a payment to watch personal media.

Exactly. So the functionality I paid for - the ability to watch personal media via the Android app - has been taken away from me.

Edit: You might be right that the purchase can be restored. However, in trying to verify that I encountered an even bigger issue: you can't even sign into the app or use it in any way without having Google Play Services on your phone. That's a deal breaker for me either way. No issue with that on Jellyfin, and even if it were it being open source means there would be ways around it.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

No the functionality you paid for is still 100% available to you because nothing. has. been. deprecated.

You can download the apk direct from Plex forums. Or from apkpure etc.

For somebody so intent on hating Plex you sure have no fucking idea about them.

You don’t need google and nothing has been deprecated. Any other shit you wanna make up to trash Plex?

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

I have the apk, I had it before my previous reply. It won't let me sign in because it requires Google Play Services. I've tried with multiple internet connections and using different DNS settings. My Plex account works fine on the website.

Even if I could sign in, I have my doubts whether it would let me restore the purchase, again because I do not have Google Play Services.

The app also includes at least 6 trackers, including 2 from Facebook:

Like I say, you're probably right about the Plex app still having the functionality. My mistake. I still prefer not to use Plex services for a number of reasons.

In any case, you've behaved like a complete asshat the entire time I've been speaking with you, so this will be my last reply.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.dbzer0.com -2 points 7 months ago

funny that i’ve got a degoogled shield running the apk locally without any issue but go off please about how im the asshat while you just keep making up shit to trash a product you don’t use or know about.

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

You think I'm making up the trackers? I've verified this using 3 different tools.

De-googled =/= does not have any Google Play Services. Apparently you've still got some remnants leftover. I prefer never having it installed to begin with.

I used the service before, I don't anymore. I've not made anything up, I was mistaken about something, then as soon as you brought up the ability to restore the purchase I went and checked - only to find bigger issues (trackers and an inability to sign in).

I've engaged in good faith. You've done nothing but act like an asshat, from the moment you jumped into this thread.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 7 months ago

I thought you were done engaging, how have I been an ass? I’ve merely corrected the bullshit you keep making up based on an arbitrary hatred of a media player lol.

I can assure you my shield is not phoning home to any google services. It barely accesses anything on the web, and has a very small whitelist of accessible domains. But whatever man, I thought you were done with this conversation. I’m sure there’s another new thread you can spread fearmongering crap about Plex in.

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Still no comment about the trackers, I see.

You didn't provide a correction until your 6th comment. You said a lot of bullshit before then. I made one mistake, after initially focusing on the merits of open source communities vs closed source businesses.

I haven't spread fear, I made a mistake, which I've owned up to. 4 times now. Yet, you continue to be an asshat, with each and every comment. At this point I'm just curious to see how long you keep that up.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.dbzer0.com -3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

What do you want me to say about trackers? What the hell?

This discussion has been about whether or not Plex requires an internet connection and/or google sign in to work. It doesn’t, and that’s obvious now.

I guess you’re butthurt and bored so you gotta keep talking about other shit? I don’t give a fuck about trackers because I run Plex locally and walled off from 99%+ of the internet. It doesn’t affect me. Seems like it really affects you for some reason though.

Other people can do whatever the fuck they want, chief. If they want to expose themselves to tracking online either by choice or by ignorance, that’s their perogative.

You’re welcome to keep trying to start an argument but the clear reality is that you got proven wrong about google and then again about “deprecated” apps and now you’re feisty and looking to prove you’re not a tiny-dick manbaby by bringing up irrelevant points to get some kinda of “gotcha” sucker punch in before you finally stop engaging like you said you were doing 3 replies ago.

Good luck with whatever it is you’re looking for.

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

Before you jumped into this conversation, it was about Plex vs Jellyfin, about open source vs closed source, and about what it takes to get open source up to the same level.

You proved me wrong about one small point. It took you 6 comments to actually deliver that. I straight away verified that, owned up, and reframed my argument in line with the facts.

I understand it might be hard to keep track, you spew a lot of bullshit. I guess that's why you and your various alts have been banned all across the major lemmy instances. Lol, it's pretty funny that it seems like even hexbear were justified in banning you.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.dbzer0.com -3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

I see you’ve resorted to straight up insults and making up things to attack my character. Sorry the truth hurt your ego kiddo.

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

Lmfao me calling out your bad behaviour is not an insult, nor is it in any way bad behaviour itself. Calling out bad behaviour is not an excuse for you to turn around and cry that you're a victim.

You have behaved like an asshat for however many and every single comment you've delivered to me.

I'm not hurt, I'm entertained.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.dbzer0.com -3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

You’re resorting to ad-hominem attacks because you’ve run out of material to lie about lol

I’m sorry that you think calling out your lies is being an asshat 👌

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

What did I lie about? I honestly held a misconception, and when you eventually got around to correcting that, I immediately owned up.

I didn't resort to ad hominem, as much as you would like to use that buzzword to try and claw back a position when you've already lost the argument. I just got fed up with your incessant bad behaviour and had little choice but to call it out.

Apparently you're not only an asshat, you're also a sore loser. Not that this was ever about winning or losing for me, I just wanted to discuss the merits of ideas, but you apparently came here to shit all over other people. You should go hang out with seagulls, maybe they'll teach you better aim - they're certainly more respecatble than you.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

What’s it like to be so full of yourself you need to be told the same thing 8 times before you hear it lol

I’m amazed you’re ever willing to admit you learned anything. You certainly haven’t learned shit from this conversation, based on your recent comments in other threads.

You don’t get to call things “misconceptions” when you run around yelling them at other people as if they’re the truth. That’s what normal people call a “bald-faced lie.” Especially if you reached your conclusion with zero research or critical thinking.

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

You said a lot of shit, then in your 6th comment you finally explained that the feature was hidden away and can be restored. Then, I downloaded the app, found other issues that prevented me from verifying directly, but also found a support thread or something that explained how to restore it. I then reported back and admitted my mistake.

You said a lot of shit and threw a lot of insults before you eventually said something worthwhile. So I got something out of this, even if you have been and are a complete and total asshat. I'm better for having this conversation, meanwhile you're still just as pathetic as you were 2 days ago - with nothing to give hope that you'll ever improve.

For it to be a lie, I would have had to have known it was wrong to begin with. My immediate reversal when presented with the correct information (again, after 6 comments of bullshit) proves that I wasn't lying.

Meanwhile, the fact that every single comment you've delivered has had pathetic insults (ad hominem much?) proves you are an asshat.
