Not surprising. Bosses/managers these days don't want employees with drive or ambition. They want mindless cogs-in-a-machine wage slaves who will toil away at the same job for 30+ years without demanding raises, time off, etc. They don't want to train people either for any job. Hence all the 5+ years of experience for "entry level" jobs.

I was about to say. It‘s simply not in the interest of most supervisors to be actually productive or give good advice or direction or… you know do a job. Any job. They generally just want to be left alone.

I know that many people have had bad experiences, I sure have had shit managers. But I really put a lot of effort into finding people who are motivated, independent, and driven. Find that eager person, point in a direction, and get out of the way. I hire people who can do a job and let them do it.

That's good. That's what management is supposed to do. But in my experience at least, they've typically been workaholic micro-managers who try to justify their own existence by bugging the shit out of me all day long, even though I've been consistently told I'm doing a great job and one of the best at every job I've had.
