When the printer 'ran out of ink' you wound the ribbon back onto the starting spool and ran it through again. The next time you might need to turn it upside down to get any more out of it.

Yes! It was so basic & straightforward & intuitive. Now leave it to the big corporations to devise any method possible to turn consumable products into pure extortion methods.

Big caveat, printers have always been unholy hellish abominations that sense your fear and exploit it right before delivering that so important THING you need to print

Maybe you're right, maybe I have buried some latent tragic memories of my dot matrix printer jamming up leaving my school essays munched to streaky bits & shreds.
