This years MAA MathFest is in Tampa Florida, which is not a good place to be LGBTQIA+. The linked open letter asks the organizers to provide an online option, and be more honest in their messaging.

I saw math and Florida in a sentence and my brain immediately changed it to meth

I'm surprised anyone is still having conferences in Florida... Yikes

Sadly it's probably because it's cheaper.

When the main ruby (programming language) conference was held in Houston last year there ended up being a small split off conference in Rhode Island to ensure everyone had a conference they felt safe attending. Might be a good option for the math community.

Separate but equal, right?

I should have mentioned; the blog linked was new to me. Other posts include testimonials from mathematicians, which I found helpful to read.

We need more “we’re here, we’re queer” energy. Florida isn’t going to change if you’re not there to challenge the beliefs of the residents.

Florida had a bunch of queer people already and pulled this shit. No one needs to be giving any tourism dollars to somewhere if will be used to attack them
