My personal tldr is that lemmy.world & sh.itjust.works have open registration and beehaw admins are have had enough dealing with a ton of troll accounts from these 2 instances. Is this a problem for Midwest.social? I'm subscribed to a couple of (non toxic I hope) communities.

No, midwest.social hasn't defederated from either community (as far as I know) and you should continue to see and be able to interact with content from all 3. It's just that users on behaw won't be able to see/interact with content from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works, and vice versa.

Yup. At any time you can click the "instances" button on the bottom to see who we are connected with and who we block.

So far we haven't had much of an issue with either instance. So, fingers crossed.

That's one of the benefits I feel to being a smaller instance is we're not as much on the radar for things like that.

Aren't they just doing it because they can't handle the traffic currently? They'll just refederate when they can.

That and the lack of quality mod tools built into Lemmy. Anything popular on the internet has to deal with trolls and other bad actors trying to be disruptive. Users can go to the open registration instances and make a new account as fast as the instance mods can ban them.

My first thought was this was some ego bullshit in a new and growing platform. But apparently the Beehaw people reached out to the other instances and they all agreed that defederating was the only real option for now.

Yeah, makes sense. Figured it wasn't drama. Just temporary measures.

This is my fear too. I remember when identi.ca got overran with spam. It was months before they got it sorted and by the time they did the community was dead.

I mostly lurk and haven't seen any issues, yet :)

Apparently they don't even have an "enter" key. :P

i think lemmy pulled in the text of the whole article as a summary, instead of just a small part of it. I guess Lemmy doesn't know what to do correctly when linking to a post on a Lemmy :D
