What statistics? We know of one planet with intelligent life. That's pretty much a zero statistically.

they seem to be referring to the Drake equation Problem with that is that it's not a real statistic but a very simple probabilistic argument. The only real terms in the equation, when it comes to putting in actual numbers, are the number of stars and planets. The rest is just hand waving.
