You thought wrong, in the past the relationship was more complicated than hate. The US still had a lot of appeal and sometimes even looked up to in terms of institutions, rule of law, high literacy, advanced economy and so on. It didn't happen overnight, the sanctions of Iraq in the 1990s and the invasion in 2003 was the start, the genocide in Gaza is the last straw, at least for the masses.
