I just don't understand why they moved to discord instead of Lemmy. Discord is just a dumb platform for thread based discussions.
Its not that strange: people use what they are familiar with. Most people have a Discord account these days and migrating over there is as easy as clicking an invite link. In contrast Lemmy is relatively unknown and untested to the general audience, and is a step higher on the hassle scale, even if it is a similar service to Reddit - not counting the usual fediverse complications.
People are drawn to go as far down the hassle scale as possible, the fewer steps between them and their goal the better.
Not that a lot of communities did successfully migrate over here, partially or not. Lemmy is a lot more active now than when I started looking into it during the initial API struggle in June.
It's still strange because content format is vastly different between discord and reddit. I can have access to many discords for certain topics I like, but discord is just not good for them.
Absolutely, I'd personally never use Discord as I'd use Lemmy, but some people sure are trying even if it is very counter-intuitive.

Interesting how little mention there is of lemmy/kibn/the fediverse in these articles about Reddit’s demise.

A recurring theme I’m seeing in these articles is the framing of it as a RedditCorp vs mods issue. I was just a user. Yes, the mods got screwed hard here, but so did any casual user who relied on well-designed apps to allow them to access and participate in the discussions they cared about without being clotheslined by an ad every 5 seconds. This is as insulting to the users as it is anyone else.

It’s been mentioned by a few others but why did they choose Discord? This article points out the flaws with it, all of which would be resolved by migrating to Lemmy/Fediverse. I’m not a user of Discord or Reddit, so I’m not tuned in to their reasoning.

Related, another article that gives no mention to the incredible growth that’s happening over here. Maybe that’s for the best, but a little exposure couldn’t hurt. I know all of my niche equivalents over here are silent.

Shoutout to Guy in the article, most of the things he said are 100% spot on for members of any passionate community. I hope more people who continue to use that one outdated site read this article and finally ask themselves, “Why the fuck am I still sticking around this place?”
To your point 3, there have been several articles that have claimed that these reddit communities moved to discord which is completely misunderstanding the situation. Discord isn't being used as an alternative to Reddit; that's not what it's designed for. The mods have used it for coordination because of course they would.
There being no mention of Lemmy or Kbin shows that the writer knows very little about the real situation. Lots of people moved over here during June and July, but you'd only really know that if you were actually following what was going on when it happened instead of being a casual observer like the author.
Sad. That was a really useful subreddit
Are there any similar communities on Lemmy?
I don't think so, but maybe making one would be helpful. wayfarershaven.eu might be a good instance to host it on.

Discord is for gaming as far as I can tell. It is pretty wild seeing the copies of subreddits springing up on lemmy on a daily basis, along with lemmy crashing lol.
I prefer bluuit...
