I feel like this would be of limited use to me because my oily skin seems to defeat most skin-safe adhesives.

Ditto, that could definitely be a limiting factor. I wonder if the concept would still work with an elastic compress like those gauze medical wraps holding it in place.

Agreed. I'm contemplating trying something similar at somepoint here. Really want to figure out how to make my Svalboard more portable/wearable and haptic feedback of some sort is needed for most solutions that I've come up with.
