Interestingly enough I just played it for the first time earlier this year, which is weird that I didn't earlier since the first one is one of the most iconic horror games and it definitely felt different. First one is better but I really dig what they tried to do with the second since it's so much different than a most of other horror games, especially with themes.

But tbh I didn't see similarities with RE as the whole point of Outlast is that the player specifically can't fight back and blow stuff up and has to run and hide This is because the player in both games is an average journalist who only has night vision camera to navigate, not a cop, special forces operative, boulder puncher, matrix, badass spy etc.

Though I did see the similarities with RE Village and even though that's one of my favorite games, they really blew it by having a similar story to Outlast 2 and not having the entire game take place in the Castle and Village with only vampires and werewolves.

Did you play 7 too? That's really where the renaissance of the series started. I'm glad they ditched the RE5 and 6 model it was getting ludicrous.

Yes some time ago, it definitely revived the series. 5 went completely off the rails for some reason and 6 was insane but I kind of dug it since it takes place in my country and it was just mindless zombie action. 4 and 8 are my favorites personally.

7 wasn't as impactful as I expected it to be though. I guess first person horror games already existed. But it was really cool, same as 8. For most of its history Resident Evil had tank controls. It was groundbreaking when it came out on the PS1 but by the time of Code Veronica on the PS2, which I tried to replay some years ago, they still used tank controls and fixed camera angles and I was surprised. I think people at the time didn't really like it either.

I never played 4 but I think that's when they started updating the formula. Then 5 and 6 happened on the next gens in-between several offshoots on portable consoles and mobile, and for a time people really thought the series was dead for good. I even remember this song from the time of RE6 lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LrVou1Jo7w

And then Capcom said "you know what? fuck you. we're gonna put you first person in unreal engine" and everyone lost their shit. But it didn't really leave as much of an impact as I thought it would afterwards. I played a bit of 7 and the chase sequences while you were trying to solve puzzles were almost too much lol. I haven't seen many games pull that mechanic and I didn't expect a major release would do something like that. Mind you I don't even play them otherwise, I just watch let's plays. I hope they don't disappoint with RE9.

Yea, it definitely revived the series, but nothing we haven't really seen already. 8 had so much more potential if only they went into different direction which was promised.

I mean, 4 is peak, not just for the series, but for horror genre in general, it's like Silent Hill 2 of RE series. So when you have time, you gotta play it.

First person just worked with me to be honest even if I'm a longtime fan, I didn't really see the reason why some people complained.
