When I switch to Hot/All, I see a ton of posts from a German language community (and I don’t speak German). If I block the community to keep it from showing up, does it hurt them in any way? Like, I don’t want to contribute to them getting banned or something for being blocked too many times…

you can set the languages you understand in the settings. that should filter out all posts written in other languages if i understood correctly

Just so everyone knows, most people post in "undetermined" language. So if you set Lemmy to only show "English" posts, you won't see much. I'd really like the language filtering to be improved because right now there's no reason to use it.

I guess best practice will be to declare the language if it is not english, so you can filter out everything but english
