cuba was very anti-lgbtqia back in the day and there are a several noteable examples of cuban queers fleeing their shitty treatment at the hands of the cuban by climbining over embassies walls to seek asylum. castro's reply was: "let them go, we don't need them" implying that he dgaf about them.

if you're so desperate that you scale walls to get into the peruvian embassy to gain asylum as a queer in the 1980's like a january 6th rioter in the capital; things had to have been REALLY bad for you in cuba.

And is the wall scaling stuff reliable? Have heard similar stuff about haircuts in NK and other defector experiences were exaggerated a lot

We can only presume it was when he stepped back to let younger people to that control along with Raul and he saw how pro-lgbtqia they were.
