He fell in love with the potion after drinking it himself instead of getting someone else drink it to fall in love with him.
Don't think too hard about the logic. Otherwise you'll realise that if he had fed it to his girl like he was supposed to, she would be in love with the potion and not him.
Unless the rules are something like "you fall in love with what your eyes first find", and he was just alone with the potion.
